Revolution.
Hey gang, im looking to buy a Macbook Pro, particularally a 15" or 17" for university since i just got accepted (yay!) umm just a few questions, should i just wait for the new one to come out? if so whats the estimate date that it would come out? worth paying for extras such as the HDD capacity or amount of ram directly from apple? cheers fellas! - Rev. superstrikertwo
I would say no as they might get an update this summer.
Hot
I would be less likely to wait if I went for the 17" because that model usually gets upgraded later than the 13" and 15" models.
Sikh
Wait until summer and grab one with your Student Discount + Free iPod Touch. I had my buddy do that last summer before he went off to school. In July he bought the IN THE MIDDLE version of the macbook with the 9400+9600 gt and everything else basic and with his discount and apple care, came around 2046. But with his full rebate back for the iPod Touch(16 gig, got full value back), he ended up with 240 back(bought apple care for ipod too) or something in about 2 weeks. The rebate process was amazing, it automatically sent out the rebate the day he left the store, same thing with apple care, kicked in for both devices in about a day after apples system got all the info from the store. I loved the process. Only thing that took the longest time was him making up his mind and me convincing him to go 15" MBP and not 13" MBP. He thanks me for the 15" and in the middle model haha. In the end, he paid a total of 1900(18 and some change) for 15" MBP(2gb, 250gb hd, 9600+9400m gt, etc) iPod Touch 16GB 2nd Gen Apple Care - Mac and iPod. So I think it was a GREAT deal as he loves it. He plans on keeping it a full 5-8 years, well atleast in school for 4, and then his first 2 years at his job(he wants to be a history teacher.) Besides that, I installed windows 7(he was against it) introduced him to steam and now he loves his mac more haha. Overall its a good thing to wait for the summer and grab the newest model with the latest iPods. I think the 3rd gens are fine for you. The only thing coming out in september is probably an iPod touch with a camera, i wouldnt care about the camera and just grab the iPod Touch during the summer promotion. superstrikertwo
^ That's what I'm waiting for the student deal with the iPod so I can sell the iPod and recoup some money :)
andrew_f
I'd wait a little while - a speed bump is due any time soon. Keep an eye out on http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/ :)
peterish
I have the same dilemma as the OP. I'd like to know if the price of the 13" MBP will remain the same ($1200) or go up when the next gen comes out? Another question: does apple charge shipping for online orders? Brodel
There should be an update in the next few weeks I think so I would wait for a bit before buying one right now.
bobbba
Some points: Wait for the free iPod deal if you can Make sure you get your education discount(really generous discount) and buy in store if you can RAM and HDD are easily upgradeable and are frequently cheaper to add your own The guesses regarding new product leases are just that and are frequently way out, don't put too much into them Saying that there may be an update around the corner to add new intel i5, i7 cpu's <snipped>
peterish
Question: Will the future new models be more expensive? i.e. the current 13" MBP is $1200, will the new model be the same price or no?
Shadrack
Probably not. Apple generally doesn't change the pricing for their various models. It is hard to say when the next hardware refresh will be. When was the last one? October? damn, summer in america? because i start uni in march 1st, im not sure i can wait.. maybe a month? i heard that the macbook pros might come out really soon.. am i wrong? and good story by sikh, i saw about those student discount thingos. There hasn't been any official announcement that I'm aware of. Everyone was hoping to hear something the other day, but it just turned out to be about the iPad. evo0o
Just go ahead and get it. No pointing waiting, there'll always be something "coming up."
Shadrack
If you need one now, buy one, and then save up money, and when summer comes along you can sell it, and have enough money to get the best. great thing about macs and especially macbook pros is the resell value. :) But if you don't need one right now, just wait. Thats cool. Is this really what you do? How much do you normally get back from selling your old Mac? What level of wear do you normally leave it with? Do you use a keyboard protector? Sorry for all the questions. I'm considering going this route...
