Sethos
Major Nelson’s announced that Xbox Live services for the original Xbox will shut down as of April 15. It’s also been confirmed that Live servers for any Xbox titles released via the Xbox Originals service for 360 are to also be closed. The first step in the shutdown will see auto-renewals turned off for anyone using Live on an original Xbox. “We did not make this decision lightly, but after careful consideration and review we realize that this decision will allow us unprecedented flexibility for future features,” said Nelson. Find more through here. VG247 So does this mean they will finally purge the old database and free up gamertags to use on the 360? I sure hope so! I can finally get "Sethos" without added numbers. Timan Veteran Posted February 5, 2010 Veteran Share Posted February 5, 2010 I will miss being able to play Halo2... we still play it here and there. But if its to make the service better its worth it.

Hedon
I don't need bigger friends lists, but it's great for those who do. I am sure Xbox 1 was a bottleneck for some advancements that the team wanted to make going forward with the Xbox 360.

+Mystic MVC Posted February 5, 2010 MVC Share Posted February 5, 2010 God I hope that is true. I'll gladly pay 800 points to swap and secure the name Sethos (or something else more desirable than what I have) Looks like we have a problem here boys, I was also looking to have Sethos...:p On a serious note, I would really like to have Mystic without having to add 54 but I doubt I would ever be quick enough to get it. Halo 2 will definitely live on through LAN which is exactly where I spent a lot of time playing it in the first place with friends (before they had Live). Ironman273
So I saw Call of Duty 2 is on the list. Is this only Call of Duty 2 for Xbox 1? Will the 360 version still be allowed online?
Sikh
^ All 360 Branded titles should be fine. So the 360 copy of COD2 will be fine. Its just original xbox games there taking down. I think they do have a plan to keep HALO 2 going as that was/is there biggest online played game ever. Even thou most of us spent time laning with it, its still the biggest multiplayer game anyway. Its a rumor going around twitter cuz someone twittered to major and he said no offical news on it or something like that but then people started commenting and etc. I think honestly they will keep halo 2 alive, but do something to the fact where only a few games can play on live via the 360. Be it a patch or system update, they will figure something out.
what
They aren't going to purge the old gamertags. They'll still be tied to a Windows Live ID.

apreichner
I kind of think it's a mistake to discontinue XBox original games via XBLive. To discontinue the use of the original xbox is one thing, but to discontinue Live use of games they STILL sell on the Live Marketplace as XBox Originals is dumb. Ironman273
"Saddened" Bungie Plans Halo 2 Send Off On Xbox Live Earlier today, Microsoft announced that it was pulling the plug on Xbox Live support for original Xbox games. That obviously includes Bungie's Halo 2, consistently the top original Xbox title represented on Live. Bungie responds to the change. "We're all saddened at the realization that an era is coming to an end but looking back," the developer writes on its official web site, "we're incredibly fortunate to have had such a great run and such strong support from our fans." Amid plenty of thanks and well wishes, there's an obvious choking back of tears. Bungie notes with a stiff upper lip that it intends to send off Halo 2 with a bang. Or "one last hoorah," in their words. Halo 2 holdouts should book April 14 as a day to play, as Bungie promises "One final farewell and one final opportunity for all of you to kick our asses at Halo 2." Hedon
They're not going to be selling them anymore... -Spenser Are you sure? I thought they were just pulling the LIVE feature from those games, but still selling them? Kinda like they did with Battlefield Modern Combat for the 360. EA shut down the servers, so Microsoft change the feature set of the game to show it as an offline game for 1 player.
coresx
They aren't going to purge the old gamertags. They'll still be tied to a Windows Live ID. It may be possible. Windows Live ids do expire, mine for example does not exist any more but it's not available either, in that situation they should free up the tags. Also, Xbox 360 gamertags do get recycled when you change names through the dashboard so Microsoft have at least corrected part of the issue. I would hope the shutting down of the original Xbox Live will free up unused gamertags. Many are locked out as people cancelled their credit card subscription or the live id expired with Xbox 1 gamertags making them unrecoverable. Fingers crossed MS have wiggled their way out of an awkward problem.
Guest
They are just removing the multiplayer functionality from the old xbox 1 games - not old xbox gamertags. The friends list in Halo 2 is hard-coded into the game itself. Upping the friend capacity would have broken many of the older games.
giantpotato
Halo 2 players could always just get the PC version. Hopefully if interest in Halo on Games for Windows Live increases, they'll finally release Halo 3 and ODST on PC.
Valerus
I might play Halo 2 online on April 14th just to give it a proper farewell. I played H2 for so long. It was my first online game (besides Battlefield 1942, Vietnam) and it holds a dear place in my heart.

I know a bunch of other friends that will probably hop on that day too. We used to go back to H2 when H3 was ****ing us off or we wanted to just go back to reliving H2 days.
