christophulus
To further a point I made in the banning politics thread, does Neowin have a clear policy about how much someone is allowed to copy from other websites? I've noticed that a large number of threads start with an entire article being copied from another source, with the website name at the bottom. So, the source is credited, but does this violate copyright, or even a fair use policy? Surely you should only be able to quote a small block of text and reference the rest. If nothing else, it removes ad-revenue from other sites that initially wrote the article. I only raise this point because it cropped up on another forum I post on. Fair use apparently covers about 10% of the whole work, not 100%. Apologies if this is covered elsewhere but I can't find it in the Community Rules. markwolfe Veteran Posted February 5, 2010 Veteran Share Posted February 5, 2010 In the top of the BPN sub-forum there is a pinned notification from a site Supervisor (Barney). https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/819526-posting-news-from-other-sites/ There is no law or set percentage that is "fair use". It could be "fair use" to use 100% of an article in some cases (for example, doing an essay for a school or research paper). For other cases, "fair use" might not even apply at all (for a commercial profit in some way). The policies that other sites and that Neowin set up do not have the force of law behind them. They are just policies and guidelines set to be respectful of copyright.
