The original meaning of the adjective profane (Latin: "in front of", "outside the temple") referred to items not belonging to the church, e.g. "The fort is the oldest profane building in the town, but the local monastery is older, and is the oldest building," or "besides designing churches, he also designed many profane buildings".

As a result, "profane" and "profanity" has therefore come to describe a word, expression, gesture, or other social behavior which is socially constructed or interpreted as insulting, rude, vulgar, desecrating, or showing disrespect.

Other words commonly used to describe profane language or its use include: cuss, curse, pejorative language, swearing, expletive, oath, bad word, dirty word, strong language, irreverent language, obscenity language, choice words, blasphemy language, foul language, and bad or adult language. In many cultures it is less profane for an adult to curse than it is for a child, who may be reprimanded for cursing.

And here is a article where it is used by a staff member and the swear filter is not applied: https://www.neowin.net/news/steve-jobs-google039s-039don039t-be-evil039-motto-is-quotbull****quot (you may not be able to even access the article as it is censored.)

Here is the debate: I think this community should be allowed to use what ever english words they choose, in 2010 so far a 3.30% of the coummunity is below 18 ( https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/861224-official-age-height-weight-superpoll/page__st__15 )

I dont see this is a problem using whatever word a member chooses. The member will hear the word on TV or music anyhow. If you really are worried that they will read it, then I suggest (and I will vote for this option) to add a warning that it is a "adult thread" (containing words)

What do you think? :)

I'm new here, but I've been a member of several forums that do allow swearing, and some that don't... I don't really understand why it would be a neccessity, I don't feel like being profane helps me to get my point across anymore than choosing different words. Profanity certainly doesn't offend me, but I don't think any filters should be taken off...

Should be a user option to disable censorship, I'm not 5 years old and hear profanity every day.

Not saying it should be a free-pass to swear like a mad-man but it's just feels condescending to see censored words.
