Examinus
Shouldn't the donate tab lead to a Neowin page rather than just going directly to PayPal? It's inconsistent to have all but one of the tabs lead to internal pages. It would also be nice to have a Neowin page explaining the cost of upkeep and justifying why people should donate something, with a link there going to PayPal. SimplySchizo
I think it's fine. I'm sure when someone clicks on a "Donate" tab, they expect to see just that, a paypal page where where they can, donate! Also, I really dont see the need for any justification. The forums/site, speaks for itself. Anyone with a brain knows it costs to keep something like this up. No need to start another thread that's going to end up like those of recent concerning subs/anything having to do with the site and $.
MikeChipshop Member Posted February 6, 2010 Member Share Posted February 6, 2010 I think it should go to a little 'thank you for considering donating' page or something similar, going straight to PayPal seems a bit cold and clinical. It's good to see a donation page though, for those users they want to help but may not want to subscribe.

It's inconsistent to have a tab on the main navigation of your site going to an entirely different one. Also, the forums don't speak for themselves; it isn't obvious to most people how much it costs for upkeep (do you know?) and explaining some of this (as with the adverts) will more than likely lead to more donations. If you don't want this thread to be about the morality of donating then you shouldn't bring it up. I didn't.
kInG aLeXo
It will better if it shows a page explaining the cost of management and the physical infrastructure of neowin etc, and then a link to paypal and even maybe other site for people who don't like paypal or don't\can't have paypal account, like moneybookers.Redirecting directly to paypal is not so "friendly". +jamesyfx Subscriber² Posted February 6, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted February 6, 2010 Personally I think there is no need to complicate the button. You click it to donate, it sends you to the correct page to make a donation. Simple.
Roger H. Veteran Posted February 6, 2010 Veteran Share Posted February 6, 2010 I was thinking just that yesterday. It's kinda jaring when you click the donate button and you are dumped out into the paypal window. A little page on Neowin giving a bit more details to tell people they can donate (probably in a few languages :) ) would be better. Oh and yeah, when is clicking a link gonna pop out in new TAB!!! C'mon Timan!

Examinus
gosh a another tab about giving cash. they must be rolling in cash whats next  This thread isn't complaining about asking for donations but about what the tab does. I have no issue with sites asking for donations.
+jamesyfx Subscriber² Posted February 6, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted February 6, 2010 Yeah, Neowin has been politely asking for donations for years now. You can't argue that they're pushing it if you've only just noticed they're doing it.
MikeChipshop Member Posted February 6, 2010 Member Share Posted February 6, 2010 gosh a another tab about giving cash. they must be rolling in cash whats next  ... people stop bitching and moaning about it? (wishful thinking?) On topic though yes as i have said it should have a neowin page explaining it in more detail.
thealexweb
Is NeoWin actually a private company, if so I strongly disapprove donating to private companies. If not on the other hand I suppose it would be ok, still a bit shady due their relationship with stardock. I think it should be part of the subscriptions tab, it defiantly doesn't warrant its own tab.
what
Personally I think there is no need to complicate the button. You click it to donate, it sends you to the correct page to make a donation. Simple. Well, the idea of tab navigation is to make it look like you're scrolling through browser tabs, but on the site itself. Having a 'tab' that doesn't keep you on the site doesn't make sense. It's for completionists sake.
.KICK
I have agree, this is such a cold donation site. It even goes to subscribe@neowin.net, should definitely do it up and say how much it costs to run Neowin etc.
