betacortex
So I got about $1,000 to throw around and I was wondering if getting an Apple Macbook would be worth it. I need a new laptop and was considering getting the Macbook with 4Gb's of RAM, with the education discount. So a little over $1,000. I'll probably run Win 7 in Bootcamp for a backup OS for different programs but mainly will just surf and maybe do some music editing on it. Is it a good laptop? Should I wait? Let me know thanks :)
Quillz
No reason to get a MacBook if you just want something to surf and maybe do some music editing with. You'd be much better off with a cheaper netbook than can run Win7. Even look into an iPod touch or something if you just need a web browser. Also, if you're saving up for a MacBook, might as well save up a little bit more and go for the MacBook Pro.
NeoXY
And if you are set on a Mac, don't buy RAM from Apple. They are grossly overpriced.
SMELTN
Macbook Pro would be your best choice, I would probably wait though if you can, because with Macworld is this week, we may get word of the new line of macbooks and see what they have to offer

betacortex
What's the problem with just the regular Macbooks?
Quillz
What's the problem with just the regular Macbooks? They're priced in such a way that's it not really a big issue to save up another $200 or so for the 13'' MacBook Pro, which is vastly superior to any MacBook model. Shadrack
Not excited about a i5 based mac - intel onboard graphics suck compared to nvidia It will be interesting to see the line-up. Intel onboard graphics do suck in comparison to nvidia. But that should enable even better battery life (which is already good for the 9400M MBP). My guess is that the lower end MBPs will have i5 w/ integrated graphics, and the higher end MBPs will be able to switch to a higher end nvidia chip or use the integrated graphics for power saving. Chrysaor
NVIDIA has a new technology called Optimus that lets them use a low powered GPU along with a high powered one that is compatible with the Nehalem platform, thats what the new Macbooks are going to use. It is going to be announced tomorrow, which is probably when the new macbooks will be released.
+dave164 Subscriber¹ Posted February 9, 2010 Subscriber¹ Share Posted February 9, 2010 Why not get a Netbook? You can get a decent one with a high resolution for like $400. Windows 7 runs like a charm on them and you can do pretty much everything on them apart from games, etc.. Wouldn't have a problem with a bit of music editing on top of the normal stuff. betacortex
Well one of the reasons, I want a Mac is so I can play around on it and learn the OS. I've got a Windows machine and I have fiddled around with Linux so I just figured it was time to learn some of the ins and outs of the Mac OS. drshdw
How do people use netbooks? The screen is SOOOO small. I'm used to working on a 30" and just using a 15" mbp makes me frustrated..

It's about resolution, not screen size. Even an 11'' netbook these days are being made available with 16:9 (read: HD) resolution screens, which is actually a really nice size for such a small and portable machine. Dane
I think macbook pros are the better option. It's MY opinion. That you cant find a better quality laptop. I've played with almost every laptop in best buy recently, netbooks included, then went to the apple store and loved the white macbook and macbook pros. Sure windows 7 is good, don't get me wrong, its not about the OS all the time, its about the laptop thats running the OS. Most laptops only get 2.5-3.5 hours. Macbooks get what is it? 6 or 7 I think. But if the resolution is too high and on a small screen, I end up not seeing any of the detail less I'm like 6 inches away from the screen..
