Macbook Opinions

Most laptops only get 2.5-3.5 hours.

Where on Earth did you get this from? It comes down to the size of the battery... Every Dell notebook I've ever owned has had at least a 6-cell battery that easily got 4-5 hours of battery life, sometimes even more. You upgrade to a 9-cell and you're looking at 6-7 hours.

In fact, Apple typically overstates its battery life, while other vendors usually understate battery life.

LOL! That is so false.

Battery life is overstated across the board. They never use a realistic usage measure to determine battery life.

Anyway, practically speaking I get around 6hrs on my MBP.

I was browsing on best buy.com checking out laptops, most of the ones listed there are anywhere between 2.5-4hours. You shouldn't have to upgrade a laptop batter out of the box to get 5+ hours

Best Buy only has the 0-added-option laptops. If you buy a laptop from a manufacturer you can specify a larger battery to get more battery life, but it is an extra option and it costs more.

Posting from the Macbook. I appreciate the opinions and I'm looking forward to learning more about how to use this thing haha.

I just checked Apple's current price for a 4GB Ram upgrade on the Macbook and its actually a pretty good deal at $100. A 2x2GB kit from Crucial is just over $100 at Newegg currently. I know this doesn't factor in the value of the extra 2x1GB you would get from doing the upgrade yourself, but if you're just going to stick that in a drawer anyway upgrading straight from Apple seems fine.

It may be somewhat of an uphill battle, at first, but I think you will enjoy it (if you are like me just like tinkering with new ****). The thing to look out for is the small difference in language between Windows and Mac.

My only regret is not saving my pennies a little longer and going with the 17" MBP. At the time I really didn't like the weight difference. Now I think I would like the extra resolution and screen size.

Next upgrade...

Memory is really expensive at the moment. I was pricing up an additional 2GB stick from Crucial for my MacBook, and it's almost double what I paid in the summer.

Never buy RAM upgrades from Apple. Simple as that.

Agreed; the best memory I've had so far has been from Apacer - they're not as well known as Kingston or Crucial but I've found them a lot more reliable given past bad experiences with both those vendors. Both my iMac and MacBook have been absolutely rock solid since upgrading; not a single crash, hang, kernel panic etc.

This makes no sense what's so ever. If the Mac came with options then you'd have an option for less expensive than the default. The problem is that there's no option in that regard. There is a reason PCs are cheaper and that's one of them. The new Lenovo T410 has options that give it "21 hours" of battery life. Surely this is probably overstated a bit but i'm gonna go on a limb to say you are more than likely to get at least 10-12hrs of that for sure. If that was the standard option then the system would cost 2,000 but they offer it instead with a 6, 9 cell and a battery slice options so you can choose th configuration you need. Paying for 21hrs of battery life and leaving it plugged in at home would be a waste of money. Now they can only pay 1,100 and get the 6 Cell and be happy with that!

If the Mac came with choices (other than like video card and amount of RAM) your system would be much cheaper. Apple however decides what you need and that's the way you love it so you pay the price as well.

If it's going to be at home, wouldn't you buy an iMac or so anyways?
