Got ps3 but a bit underwhelmed

Recommended Posts

I got one this weekend finally. Right now there are so few games that interest me at all on this console. I mainly bought this for God of War, MGS 4 and possibly heavy rain depending on how well the demo for it is. Let me start off by saying this, I am not an xbox or wii fanboi so no one will think I am I being biased about the recent purchase. As for as games go I hate sports games because its the samething year after year, I hate FPS with a passion and feel that the Halo franschise is the most overrated golden turd of game that ever existed. I have all my GH and RB stuff on the 360 so no point in buying all that gear and games over again on a different console. I already have ninja gaiden on the 360 so no point in getting it again. If any one can suggest some games worth buying for $30 or less that would be a big help.

Right now my biggest issue aside from the lack of games is that the system refuses to do 1080p eventhough my 360 does it. I am not talking about how it changes certain games from 720p but just when loading up the system, its wont go past 1080i. When 1080p is selected it says not supported. Which is crazy because my 360 does this just fine so why not the ps3? I am hoping someone can help with this issue. My tv is a samsung LA52A850 so I know it should do 1080p just fine.

360 games don't run in 1080p (most), they upscale by the console, the PS3 for most games lets the TV scale and runs the games in their developed resolution.

Nothing to worry about, any decent TV scaler will do a fine job.

You can force PS3 games to run in 1080p by deselecting everything apart from 1080p in the video settings, but that's just stupid, let your TV upscale.

It sounded as if his Xbox 360 dashboard was going to 1080p on system start up, but not his PS3 dashboard? I don't think he mentioned 1080p native 360 games.

Because it causes slowdown and glitches in many games, let your TV upscale.

Yeah true, PS3 will always do 1080p on the XMB if your TV supports it.

Yup. My 360 and PS3 always launch on the dashboard in 1080p. I wonder why his will not though.

Only thing I can think of is cables, is he running HDMI or component, and if HDMI, try the cable that the 360 is using.

I guess I don't play on it enough to notice, hardly any games interest me except for GT5 but the demo of that didn't really excite me at all...

Or maybe if it's run through a receiver doing the conversions as well?

If the receiver can do passthrough for 360 it can do passthrough for PS3.

Right...which is what mine does. Maybe it's possible that something in the receiver could be messing up as well, no?

I tried this too. I dont have a receiver yet either for speakers, thats something I want to get soon though. I tried switching out all the hdmi cables I had and I tried switching the ports. Today I am going to try to update the firmware on the tv to see if it helps. I already updated the firmware on the ps3, just so you all know its a slim model.

I know you said you don't like sports games, but does that include racing? Some people consider them the same category. If not, pickup Burnout Paradise. You should be able to find it for $15-20

Re: games

Get the first Uncharted, that should be around $20 or so. Obviously you mentioned MGS4. Since you like God of War, pick up the collection. I own the first 2 on PS2, still picked it up to get a refresher in (pseudo-) HD, plus trophy support. inFamous can be found for around $25-35, Dead Space, the first Bioshock (has bonus content not found on XBox), the Ratchet & Clank games. Also, Burnout Paradise is available for download, no disc needed, runs fantastic and was one of the first multiplatform games built for PS3 first.

Just did a quick search and the following games are ~$30 that you probably don't have already for 360. I tried to stay away from sports games and FPS's for you

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

inFamous

God Of War Collection

Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction

Metal Gear Solid 4

Plus you can get awesome cheap games in the PSN Store:

Flower

Fat Princess

Wipeout HD

Pixeljunk Eden

The Last Guy

About the PSN store is there any way to search for stuff to download like the xbox market place? I tried searching it online but it seems to want to lock you in to only what they want you to see.

You can search within the Playstation Store, just go to PS3 and then it gives A-Z searching. Alternatively you can go to the latest stuff.

Another PSN game to look for is Pixeljunk Shooter and even Shatter, both very good games.

There's a search icon top right on the PSN store

I think he is talking about searching on your PC via the web browser, not from the console. The Xbox has the Marketplace web online where you can search and buy your products. PSN doesn't have that yet.

Yes, this is exactly what I am talking about. Also another poster mentioned game sharing, Just how does this work?

A PSN account can be activated on 5 different PS3's this allows groups of people to make a single account and purchase games via it and all activate on their machines. Cutting down the cost of the games. Not all games allow the activations and some only allow it to be played on the account that bought it Warhawk and GT5:P off the top of my head. Others like Braid when reading the TOS only allow one activated account to download it per 24 hours which was a new one on me.

1080p mystery solved. The ps3 is alot more pickier than the 360 in terms of hdmi cables. The 360 uses an older standard of hdmi I think either 1.1 or 1.2 but the ps3 uses like the 1.3 standard. So if you dont use a 1.3 cable the highest it will go is 1080i. Those damn jaggys were getting on my nerves since getting this system so I bought another cable online. No you dont have to buy those grossly overpriced hdmi cables that are like $200, any $5 cable will do so long as it is compliant with the 1.3b standard. So I bought some 1.3b cables and now I get full 1080p. I hope this bit of info can help someone else when they run into the same problem.

I don't know why you experienced a change in your resolution with a new cable. Any HDMI cable supports 1080p. You can even use component cables for 1080p games.
