EA "partially withdrawing" from EAPartners Program

To help improve the company's overall profit margin, EA will be partially withdrawing from its external publishing efforts, which are centralized under its EA Partners label.

"While we have great relationships with our partners, we are modeling a reduction in our distribution business as we concentrate on higher-margin EA owned titles and digital initiatives," said COO John Schappert during a post-results analyst conference call.

The move is expected to be reflected by a $450 million year-over-year drop in distribution revenue for the company.

The company was sure to note that some external titles will still be accepted for EA distribution -- after all, it still plans to publish Crysis 2 and an untitled Epic shooter, both EA Partners releases.

"Tighter focus will yield better results," the executive said of the plan.

Internally-developed PC games can have a profit margin of up to 90 percent, while internally-developed console games can return margins of 60 to 70 percent, EA explained, while externally-developed titles necessarily generate lower margins for the publisher.

Tomato Sauce

In short, expect to see less Tim Schaffner, Starbreeze and more of GENERIC CONSOLE SHOOTER 9 - TIME FOR MORE FISTBUMP. Could this be a return to the old EA? :s

It is also rumored due to this announcement they are dropping Rock Band support on 31st of March so MTV will need to find a new publisher.

If this is why EA made Dead Space 2 console-only, then thumbs down to them. (N)

Doubtful that's the reason

Internally-developed PC games can have a profit margin of up to 90 percent

I also can't imagine dropping Rock Band, that's a gold mine, especially in long term revenues from DLC.

But I wouldn't expect any more "Orange Box" type ports.

Is it? Once you take out royalties, the fees which go to their various labels and so on. The developers salary for making it. How much goes to EA?

I doubt this will affect the Battlefield franchise. EA acquired DICE before the release of Battlefield 2, and EA has plans to release Battlefield 3 as a PC-only game.
