Activision expresses interest in subscription-based Call of Duty

Recommended Posts

Infinity Ward may have tried to distance itself from the rumors about the Call of Duty franchise going down Subscription Lane?, but Activision head honcho Bobby Kotick said otherwise during the publishing giant's recent earnings call. "If you think about the success that we've had in other product categories on subscription, you can get a sense of the direction that we want to take that franchise," he said.

It's by no means a confirmation that you'll be Oscar Mike to the Inn before heading into the Den of Eternal Bunnyhoppers or whatever. But if there's anything Activision is good at, it's learning how to make more money from the massive amounts of money it's already made -- and subscription-based games generate the cash money on a monthly basis.

They're just milking the franchise. Modern Warfare 2 is a huge blockbuster hit. Why would Activision not get interested in a subscription based game when people are willing to pay for Xbox Live subscriptions?

you can't compare xbox live versus a sub for cod. you're talking about a one time fee for an overarching service for an entire year compared to a monthly fee or w/e they decide for one game.

Xbox Live Gold - $40 per year

Call of Duty Online - $? per month

Imagine Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 ($50) split into a one time fee for the game ($30-$40) and another $30-$40 for access to multiplayer, ridiculous number of achievements and a 1 million+ subscriber base.

I think that more and more games are going like this. As long as people are willing to pay for this, they're going to keep doing it. I for one refuse to pay for subscriptions for games. I would never, ever pay.

well if they do, can kiss goodbye to success of that franchise. only die-hards would play it.

12 million people from WOW say you're wrong (which btw, I guarantee a large percentage never have actually played RTS Warcraft). There'll just be new players.

If they can legitimately do a COD MMOFPS then I can see how paying monthly fees are acceptable, but if it's just regular multiplayer then **** that.

awesome.. looks like they finally found something to make me stop playing.

same here

ive put in over 10 days worth on cod6 so far... this will give me an incentive to do more different things... even get through my back catalogue of games which i have abandoned since cod6

could be a blessing in disguise lol

it's still just one game that's my point. WOW is really the anomaly so you can't expect every mmo to make money and especially not on consoles where mmos are non-existant to failures. The only way this would be successful is if it worked on consoles because that's where all the money from that game is coming from.

Unless they did something so unbelievable unique and groundbreaking to justify the subscription, why would console gamers pay $80-100 per year for an "enhanced" multiplayer with COD when they can just play any other FPS for the same effect. That's the problem of the FPS genre, there's nothing so special about any one particular game that it could get away with charging simply to play online.

It'd have to be a MMOFPS to worrent the cost or if it's just normal multiplayer then I don't even those WoW players you're thinking of will pay for this either. It's gotta be something big, like MAG, large online "cities"/maps with a crapload of players running around shooting each oher. Otherwise, forget it, not worth it no matter what the price is.

Activision expresses interest in subscription-based Call of Duty.

Player base expresses interest in Battlefield series.

Simples. If this does happen, Valve should totally decide to produce a Counter-Strike 2.0 after all, then it's sure to fail :p

(P.S CS 2.0 has been canceled and isn't going to happen, at the moment).

I think they should start splitting up SP and MP in games. For me who dont play MP I dont see a reason why I should pay full price for a game I only use for SP. Specially since SP games are starting to suffer in length due to devs spending more time on making the MP better and better.

Charge $30 for MW2 SP, and be able to buy an upgrade to enable MP for another $30.

and i express interest in waving my middle fiinger.

people need to boycott subscription everything. PSN is going to be subscription based eventually; Xbox Live already is. Hulu is going to be subscription based soon. it's getting out of hand. boycott boycott boycott.

The unfortunate truth is, people out there will pay for it. And companies like Activision and Infinity Ward are in it for profit. Personally, I won't pay for a subscription-based Call of Duty (or FPS game for that matter).

They see the great success with MW2, a crippled game, yet millions of sheep bought it anyways, why not fleece the sheep a little more.

It's easy to call people sheep when you don't like a game. But take a moment to think about why the game was successful instead of blindly hating it. It's a great game a successful game because of that. I used to like it, but got tired of it. I don't see it as a bad game though.

I call them sheep when there have been many warnings all over the place telling people the game is crippled due to lack of dedicated servers and they flock to buy it anyways.

I downloaded a "trial" version of the game, it's a nice game however there was nothing there to justify paying more than $20 for it much less spend $60, and the lack of dedicated servers as well as IW's smug attitude toward pc gamers makes it a no brainer.

I would have no interest in paying for a subscription game based on COD, but none the less I would like to see how it would work and if it would be successful.

Why are you getting so mad and offensive towards people that like to play MW2? It was a heavily overrated game, but I played and enjoyed it more than enough to justify the full price. And apparently alot of people still love to play it, hence why it's no.1 on Xbox Live.

No, you're wrong. It's not overpriced on the consoles. Why? It's entertainment and cheaper than movies and other forms of entertainment regarding the cost/hour ratio.

$60 (initial cost of game) / 40-00+ hours of gameplay makes the game cost <=$1.50/hour. I ask you to find entertainment at a better value. The same thing applies with the pricing of Mass Effect 2 and other 40+ hour video games.
