Berzerker
Hello everyone! I really need some assistance on this matter and would be really greatful if i could solve the problem. I got myself a copy of CoD4:MW2 and im loving the game but the FPS lag is starting to get really frustrating. I dont really have the best computer but i reckon this game shouldnt lag anyway. My specs are: AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 2gb ram NVidia gForce 8600GTS.. Im running the game on windows 7 -32bit. I can play games like Bioshock 2 and Mass Effect 2 on it on medium graphics but cant even play modern warfare on low settings without dropping to about 10-15 fps, it seems really wierd. Can't afford an upgrade right now but hopefully you can help me solve this so the game gets playable. Thanks alot for your time /Berzerker
cropcircles
Server/broadband issue or game issue? Updated Nvidia driver. If you are all updated I would uninstall/reinstall driver. Are you overclocking. You could give 196.34 Beta a try. modern warfare 2 lag issues

DirtyLarry Veteran Posted February 14, 2010 Veteran Share Posted February 14, 2010 Well what graphical settings are you trying to run the game at? You may just have to lower the resolution more than you would like, etc. But if you share what settings you are trying to run perhaps we could help a little more. But I can tell you shadows and lighting always have a pretty big affect on a games performance, so definitely also try lowering them. Also what kind of sound are you using? If it is onboard sound make sure you have the latest drivers for that. I have really only see it once or twice over the years, it is truly rare. but I have seen sound cause a game to run awful until I updated sound drivers, especially when I used realtek ac97onboard sound, so may be worth looking for drivers for your sound, on-board or otherwise. Doubtful that would be the cause, but worse case scenario is your sound drivers are up to date if they were not already.
Berzerker
Hey DirtyLarry, thanks for the advice. I updated the sound drivers even though i dont have an onboard sound card. Im trying to run in on the lowest possible graphics but the highest resolutuion, i tried lowering the resolution, it worked a bit but i still lagged. Every detail turned off, shadow, ragdoll, bullet impacts etc. All the other details on "low". It looks like crap now :(

Mayn1ac
Hey DirtyLarry, thanks for the advice. I updated the sound drivers even though i dont have an onboard sound card. Im trying to run in on the lowest possible graphics but the highest resolutuion, i tried lowering the resolution, it worked a bit but i still lagged. Every detail turned off, shadow, ragdoll, bullet impacts etc. All the other details on "low". It looks like crap now :( Have you had any joy with this ? Im having exactly the same issue. Mine runs sweet on any display setting fr 30-60 secs, then is goes to cr@p, like Im playing in slow-motion. Im currently searching everywhere for a fix, Ive tried graphic drivers, re-install of Steam and MW2. Nada, still shot. If I find anything Ill let you know. If you could do the same Id appreciate it. Sikh
I had the same setup as you can could play the first one very well. I would say stop trying to reach the highest resolution you can. Go to 1024*768 and see how it runs. If it runs good, keep it, if you dont like it and want a higher resolution your gonna have to deal with drops. cropcircles
Not sure Berzerker but check your memory. Assuming your not having issues with other games but check background services and programs running. Also sometimes antivirus/security suite programs can cause some lags if they are running while your gaming via server/Steam. Just some thoughts. Good luck. Mayn1ac
I fixed it !! Its all a bit embarassing really. Id like to give the story as having happened "to a friend" but alas, its me thats doing the impression of a know-nothing noob. Anyway. I did all sorts of stuff. Drivers for everything, remove reinstall MW2, Steam the works. Out of bordom/desperation I fired up an app called CPUID, shows running temps of CPU, GPU etc. (Im running with a GeForce 7600 GS) My GPU was running at 102C, well, I thought, thatsa bit warm. That cant be right, so I popped the case, lightly touched the heatsink... FFFUuuu... that hurt. So checked the std operating temp, should be idle 40-50 and maybe up to 70'ish when working hard. So mine was a tad on the warm side. Had a look and the fan wsnt spinning, and was full-o-crud. Quick bit of air later and Im running within the std limits and back to playing MW2 1600x900 everything turned on without a single frame dropped. Summary - Overheating video card - (Note that NVidia have pulled the update 196.75 due to reports of heating management issues. If you updarted to this, get 196.21 instead.)
