+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted February 16, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted February 16, 2010 Final Fantasy XIII director Motomu Toriyama has said to CVG he reckons the review scores so far for the RPG have been seen "from a western point of view". "We think many reviewers are looking at Final Fantasy XIII from a western point of view," he said. "When you look at most Western RPGs, they just dump you in a big open world, and let you do whatever you like. "[it] becomes very difficult to tell a compelling story when you're given that much freedom." Recently, reviews for the Japanese version of the game have been mixed. OPM UK gave the game a 9, but PSM3 was revealed last week to have given 70 percent. For the record, what we've played of the Japanese version so far is awesome. FFXIII is out in the west on March 9 for PS3 and 360. Source: http://www.vg247.com...-says-toriyama/ I have no idea what this guy is on, considering FF7-FF9 dumped you in large open worlds with much choice, even FF10 a bit, and FF12 definitely at times. What a moronic statement to cover up poor reception.
Massiveterra
Someone should tell BioWare that it's difficult to tell a compelling story when you're dumped in a big open world and the player can do whatever they like edit: wait a minute, this isn't the same square enix that wants to reach out to a larger western market, is it? Geoffrey B. Veteran Posted February 16, 2010 Veteran Share Posted February 16, 2010 Yeah read this over at Kotaku, and honestly point of view does not really matter, if people like, or dislike a game it is personal preference. However, Ever since Final Fantasy X they have drastically changed the way you play a Final Fantasy game, now that they are Linear rather than open over world style games. FF12 was not linear, although they did change battle mechanics for it.
DKAngel
ff12 was fairly linear, it still had a story to move u in the right direction, u wernt just dumped and could go where ever u had to progress, same with ffx and ffx-2 actually almost all the final fantasys had a progessing story line where u couldnt go where ever u wanted

All lacking in 13.
Massiveterra
The main story of FF12 was linear, like many rpg's. But you weren't forced to progress like that if you didn't want to.
Massiveterra
Hrm...We don't seem to have the same positive reception in the west like we do in Japan. What should we do? Oh I know, let's compare it to their largest selling game! "The basic RPG functions are to go into towns, prepare for battle by going to shops, then go out in the field," Toriyama explained. "In that sense, Final Fantasy XIII doesn't have towns or shops?it's more that players are thrown into a story, presented with different situations as they move forward in the field and keep progressing that way."Here's how that relates to Call of Duty, in Toriyama's mind. "In that sense it's more similar to an FPS genre, like Call of Duty," he said. "That's not to say it's an action shooting game at all, so Final Fantasy XIII takes some different aspects of different genres, transcending different types of games." http://kotaku.com/5470533/final-fantasy-xiii-creators-on-the-influence-of-call-of-duty-card-games--the-toyota-prius

Xilo
FF13 looks to play exactly like Xenosaga. I rather enjoyed the Xenosaga games and I'll probably enjoy FF13.
Si Veteran Posted February 17, 2010 Veteran Share Posted February 17, 2010 I'll take FF's start to finish gameplay any day. I have more games to be playing don't you know, open world takes too long :D
Pablo2008jedi
I started playing FF series from 7 and played every other from that series (except the MMO) Even though they have gone from Open World to a more Linear story telling mode, I have enjoyed everyone. Infact I didn't do all of 7's side missions. I just played it through, once, for the story. I'm still very much looking forward to this, and I ain't canceling my week off work to play it :p
