Rumor: Sonic 4 screens and footage leaked

If this is really leaked off-screen footage and screenshots of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 sent in to 1UP, we're surprised to say that it really, for real looks like a Sonic game. Despite a lazy jump animation, it actually looks like something that could satisfy those of us desperate for a genuine Sonic experience. Therefore, we predict either that this stuff is an elaborate fake, or that, after the first level, Robotnik freezes Sonic solid and you spend the rest of the game as Amy Rose dragging Sonic in a little red wagon. Those are the only ways we can reconcile what we see and what we know about Sonic games.

Visible in both the video and the screens is a menu that reveals stages called the Splash Hill Zone, the Casino Street Zone, and the Mad Gear Zone (which probably isn't a Final Fight crossover), as well as a Sonic 1-style Special Stage. Check out the video after the break and face the terrifying proposition that you may become interested in a Sonic game.

Frustratingly, this footage is as wobbly as all furtive "leaked" off-screen game footage is -- despite the fact that the person shooting it clearly had enough control to turn on the system and start the game on demand, suggesting that this wasn't a spur-of-the-moment video opportunity. Maybe the shaky-cam effect makes it look more like what people expect of a leak.

Thank god they didn't put it on the Wii, HD 2D looks so crisp and good when done right.

Pretty sure this will end up multiplatform though.

edit: Seems there's more details out than we know, and it is multiplatform, Wii included - http://www.neogaf.co...ad.php?t=386610

What Was Revealed

- Trailer: http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/acti...o/6249444?hd=1

- Interview: http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/acti...&mode=previews

- Official Site: http://www.sega.com/sonic4/us/index.html

- Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1

- Released July 2010 on XBLA, PSN, and WiiWare

- Likely coming to iPhone / iPod Touch / iPad later as well judging by the "?" platform on the title screen at the end of the trailer

- Picks up right after Sonic 3 & Knuckles as far as story goes (so falls in Sonic 2 / Sonic 3 / Sonic & Knuckles storyline)

- spin dash, power sneakers, and homing attack are in

- Wii version uses motion control, PS3 version uses Sixaxis

- Wii version runs at 480p, PS3 and 360 version run at 1080p

If real.... I hope there's more to it than this.

Retro is OK, and I will happily pay a fiver, or maybe ?7.50 for Sonic, but they're going to have add something more to the mix if this is to be a full-priced game.

Looks great. This is what Sonic's all about. Nonsense-super-fast-scrolling-levels-type game that you can complete in one go.

That's what's destroyed the past several Sonic games. I want it to be exactly like 1, 2, and 3. There's no reason to add more to them.

Looks fake to me, but still interesting. Sonic 4 as a pure 2D game has a lot of appeal. My only hope at this point is that there's a PC and/or DSiWare/DS version, 'cause I'm not touching any of the consoles with a ten foot pole.

The running animation looks exactly like the official Sonic 4 trailer shown from Sega earlier, so this is most likely real.

That said, while I am very excited by the concept, I am extremely disappointed by the running and jumping animations, it's like they're not even trying o_O. Those are the two most used animations, you'd think they at least try to get those right. Also, it seems to me like the game could use a slightly more zoomed-out camera to give a bit more warning of what's coming. But again, can't really judge it until it's out... but they better not screw up the name Sonic 4, it's a big undertaking using that name.

Edit:

HAHAHAHAHA right after I watched it and posted, the video was removed by SEGA, definitely legit

damnit...i wanna watch it

is this Sega trying to copy how Apple builds hype, by releasing abit of info at a time?

and yeah i think it would be interesting if you really do play as Amy Rose carting a frozen Sonic around in a little red wagon..

New leak

If you notice, the zones are called casino street zone, Mad gear zone, and lost labyrinth zone... are like no different than, casino night zone, metropolis zone and Labyrinth Zone... Pretty much zones from sonic 1 and 2 but redone.. sonic 4 being the continuation of sonic 3? Doesn't look that way ..sigh

actually , these levels correspond to the 'casino/carnival' , 'techno city/factory' , and 'ancient ruins' cliches which are three of the 10 cliches in sonic games... http://info.sonicretro.org/Category:Sonic_clichés

for example the 'lost labyrinth' zone takes the second half of its name from the 'labyrinth zone' from sonic 1 , but the first half of its name comes from 'lost world' from sonic adventure

and reusing level names is quite a normal thing for the sonic series too...

Well, here's our first genuine surprise since the official reveal of Sonic 4: Sega, and its cherished Sonic Team studio, isn't developing the game.

Instead, Osaka-based Dimps will be. Best known for their recent work on Street Fighter IV with Capcom (and also for its work on Dragonball Z's cartoon fighters), Dimps will also be known to Sonic fans as the developers behind games like Sonic Rush and Sonic Advance.

Those titles are among the best Sonic games in recent memory, showing that while the blue hedgehog continued to blunder through ill-suited 3D environments, there was still life in the concept of a fast, 2D Sonic game.

Meaning this is a rare example of smart thinking by Sega Japan, realising that if this game had any chance of success whatsoever, it was best to put it in the hands of somebody not only experienced at decent 2D Sonic games, but who also did not have "Sonic Team" on their business cards.

Interesting....
