Ubisoft releases new online DRM

Recommended Posts

When are paying customers going to get a clue and use the same cracks the pirates use? It doesn't make you a pirate to use cracks on games you paid for.

Ubisoft will stop this crap when the stink gets bad enough or their sales plummet. Starforce anyone? Just give it a year or so and it will go away.

People can try downplaying it all they want. It doesn't matter how reliable your Internet access is. The fact is that some people live in areas where their connections are unstable (they may just get their service from a bad node or whatever), and now they're not even going to be able to play a single-player game without suffering through some completely unnecessary grief.

Between Activision's feature-deprived ports and Ubisoft's horrific DRM, the PC certainly isn't getting a lot of love from major publishers. Still, I suppose the best thing that we can do is to vote with our dollars and just not buy it. Perhaps it's too much to ask, but I really don't want to see people pirate this either. The best way to fight against companies like this is to not be who they think we are.

Petitions do nothing. Vote with your wallet...

Think somehow ubisoft have really shotgunned themselves in the foot with this one. Glad I've no interest in any games coming from them.

Good luck "pirating" it with your crappy net :)

I said it went down all the time, not that it was slow, my downloads will resume after it's back up even if my connection does drop during download. No biggie.

Penny Arcade dealt with this on Friday. Although they don't like the DRM and predict it will fail, they understand why a company is forced to try something.

Alright. So,Ubisoft's new DRM. Supports unlimited installs and Cloud-based save data. Requires absolutely unbroken access to their master servers, or the product ceases to function. I can boil it right down for you:

Nobody wins.

Well, except pirates. Pirates always win, on a long enough timeline. Honestly, the timeline doesn't even need to be that long.

Visit any thread regarding the topic, and I mean any thread, and it won't be three posts until someone raises the Goddamned Jolly Roger and says they'll pirate the game as a gesture consistent with some comprehensive ur-morality they've ginned up, one where stealing things is alright provided they were very angry when they did it. It's entirely possible that you don't like being spoken to in this way, but somebody has to get this done. What Ubisoft is doing here is Draconian - I don't mean those lizard dudes, I'm talking about laws which are characterized by their severity. Before they eventually dismantle it, and it will be dismantled, it will have achieved exactly the opposite of their intention. But what I won't tolerate from rational beings is the idea that you don't understand why they're doing it.

Every avenue of convenience for the user is also a vector of exploitation.

They have given up.

As fiery rhetoric goes, this sucks. It doesn't have that revolutionary quality that rallies the faithful. The trouble is that this dialogue between pirates and publishers, one which was always characterized by falsehood and ill-will, has ceased to exist in this case. A maneuver this extreme means that they're finished talking altogether: this mechanism is their response, the final word. Only it's impossible to get the final word here in The Cloud. Ever.

And no-one of any sense has ever bet against the scorn and resourcefulness of young men.

I would love it if this DRM is uncrackable. That way Ubisoft can't claim poor sales are due to piracy, and pirates won't be getting their hands on a game for free.

Although I don't agree with how restrictive it theoretically is, practically it won't be any different than playing any other games for me. I play all my games from my desktop and my net rarely goes down. Team Fortress 2 has had this 'DRM' for years, you can't play unless you're online and I haven't had any trouble playing TF2.

You're the minority of the PC gaming world. Many people have bandwith limitations, dial up, and other network problems that are not attributed to how powerful their system is. TF2 is a multiplayer only game so it does require a network connection, which is not a form of DRM.

Exactly, TF2 virtually requires internet access to play because you are playing against other people (keep in mind you CAN play offline now on a lan server with Bots). When AC2 and other Ubisoft games become Multiplayer only, then this type of "DRM" will be acceptable. As it stands right now, it would be as if TF2 required you to have an active internet connection (to connect to Valve servers) but only allowed you to play lan servers against bots or people on your local network.

Everyone is missing the point. Ubisoft isn't stupid; they know people hate this and that's exactly what they want. The goal is to sabotage their already-suffering PC platform. They don't want to develop for it and as soon as the PC profit margin is low enough, they'll have a business reason to pull out of developing for the PC platform.

Right, so there going to put time and effort into creating such horrible DRM for the PC that they stop developing games for the PC instead of just putting a stop to it and not having to polish console to PC ports and develop such DRM. Makes perfect sense, lets waste tons of money for an excuse to stop developing on a platform instead of just stopping because we do not want to develop on it!

By the game. Crack the DRM.

I'm all for supporting game companies if they make good games, but DRM is just wrong. I fully support crackers who strip that stuff from games.

Care to share where you got that information from (minority) ? Bandwidth has very little to do with it, it's not like he's getting the game's data from the internet, it's merely a check to see if he's online and authorized, ANYONE can handle that, bandwidth wise, that is.. about crappy connections that get disconnected (such as mine from time to time), it blows, indeed.

I still think that people who live in rural areas and have a crappy internet or simply no internet at all should just move the hell out and stop their whining, apparently the games are SO bloody important to them, so moving shouldn't be a problem, after all gaming is their whole life, apparently..

It would be great if developers/publishers could cater for every type of customer, but and it certainly is possible, but what can you do ? Not buy the game ? There will be always be people that will buy the game no matter what, earning the company the needed money to offset the game development costs, at least, and if they made any profit, the company sees this as a green light to continue ****ing us over, same **** happens with a different game, a different company..

Sigh.. I don't like the whining of the people, because they're trying WAY too hard to come up with "reasons" not to buy the game, because of this DRM, just tell the truth, there's one reason mainly, it would suck major ass to play that sort of game, PERIOD. Stop mentioning the poor ******* in rural areas.

I'm a paying customer and I still use cracks for most games I have. Lumping everyone together that uses cracks, as pirates, is a bit lame.

Ya, no kidding. I read his post and was like "is he high?" I live on a 4 acre lot surrounded by forest with a nice creek running through just below my house. Not only that but I pay 600 canadian + utilities to live here. Oh, and it's JUST outside the city (5 kilometers away). This is the PERFECT place aside from me having to use wireless internet. I'm sorry, but there's more important things in life than having a stable internet connection.

I have been waiting for Assassin's Creed 2 since the first came out and I bought it on release day. I have yet to play the 360 version because the pc version of the original was so much better than the 360 version. I WANT to buy this game. I, however am somebody that speaks with their wallet, so I am torn whether or not to actually buy this game on pc. I think what will end up happening is I'll wait to see if they actually release the game with this DRM, and if they do, then I will just buy the 360 version anyways (and it will be cheaper by then so a bonus). In all likelihood I will then pirate the pc version of the game to experience the differences. Either way they make their money, but I would feel very dirty buying a game with this DRM on it, not to mention be very annoyed playing it if it wasn't cracked.

To make matters worse, I'm also looking forward to the new Settlers game, which they said would get this DRM as well.
