whipper25
okay...i'm helpin my friend setup up his network at his place with a linksys befsr41 4 port cable/dsl router..the same setup with the same router at my place...the only difference is he has a nokia dsl modem with only one lan port, mine has 4 ports...in my setup all my cables are 'straight through' so i figured it would be the same at his place..but later realized the existing cable that connected the modem to his pc used a crossed over cable.. so i figured, when setting up the network, that the cable connecting the modem to the router should be crossed, and the other cables connecting from the router to the other pc's should be 'straight through'...this did not work..the router did not recognize (port indicators don't light up) the connected pcs...now i've tried all cable combinations (all crossed, all straight through, straight through modem to router and the rest crossed, crossed modem to router and the rest straigh through)..the router still does not recognize the connected pcs thought the router might be busted...so i brought it to my place and hooked it up..worked fine.. thought the cables might have been crimped wrong..double checked and redid them thought maybe the modem is busted, but his internet connection (when x-over cable is connecting his pc directly into the modem) works flawlessly... i don't know what else could be the problem.. are there compatibility issues between the router and the modem..do only certain routers work with certain modems? any help would be appreciated
