BGM
what you are referring to is known as a hackintosh... and although not really legal, is a possibility. i imagine if you were to buy a license and then attempt to do this it would be ok, but it's a very grey area.. the reason being because as far as i know in order to get OS to install on a non apple machine it has to be modified, and the downloading and installing of these modified versions of OSX isn't really endorsed.. and is certainly illigal if you do not have a license for the said software.. Your chance of success will depend on how close to 'reference design' your target machine is. I know for example that some of the IBM thinkpads will work pretty much out of the box including wifi and graphics acceleration, but cannot comment on other laptops specifically.. I think a general rule of thumb would be that if you spend a good bit of wedge on your laptop you have a decent chance of getting everything working correctly... some reading material: http://www.hackint0sh.org/ good luck! As for the intel 945, I believe that chipset will allows qe (visuals) drivers will always be hit an miss. You never know until you try... and try... and try... As the other poster said, this is a very 'gray' area. I have successfully installed osx 10.5.x, I never felt like going through all of the EFI and DDST(or whatever it is) with 10.6 so I bought a mac. If you have the time head to insanelymac.com or do a search with your model number and osx86 you will find a TON of information.
+Dick Montage Subscriber² Posted February 18, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted February 18, 2010 There is nothing "illegal" about it. It breaks the terms of the EULA, but that is not a law. Please don't confuse the two. Now, as for hardware support/drivers - it depends how close the hardware is to Apple specific hardware. Case in point - my Dell Mini 10v uses pretty much the same internal hardware as a MacBook, and so is supported. A better place to ask/learn would be insanelymac.com Good luck :)

You need something like Darwin to present a EFI to the OSX bootloader (i believe thats the terminoligy correct anyway). I have done it for ****s and giggles before, but in the end it was all a bit pointless. Its fun to begin with, to get all the hardware working correctly etc, but once its working, i personally though, ok, how what? You cant upate the OS becuase it might break it. Otherwise, unless your looking to actually use a Mac for anything other than just to play around with, its worthless. it is illegal if you do not have a license to the OS you have hackintoshed :) But they are both talking about purchasing a real copy, so there is no problem... :)

Things have changed dramatically in the last 6 months to a year. Things are much easier and much more reliable, even to the point of being able to update directly via System Update. chicken-royal
o.. really now... Yep - in my experience anyway. I was able to update from 1.6.0 (retail disk) to 1.6.2 no problems. Using it in a virtual machine though, could be different installed "properly". Good thing about using a virtual machine was creating a snapshot before updating.
