Valve slams 'sh*tty party games'

Recommended Posts

Valve has slammed "sh*tty" motion control party-games - and, despite expressing interest in Project Natal, has pledged never to place a 'tiresome' mini-game for the device in Left 4 Dead.

Speaking exclusively to CVG ahead of the release of Left 4 Dead 2 DLC The Passing, Valve writer Chet Faliszek said that the studio believes Project Natal is "really cool" - but begged other developers not to waste the opportunity it presents.

"Hopefully we've gotten past the point of mini-games," he said. "I'm sick of that [makes arm movement]. That's not a game for me anymore. Let's get some real interaction going.

"We have these technologies now that let us interact in different, really exciting ways. It's developers' jobs to do something with it. Impress me. Don't just make sh*tty games I wouldn't want to play if I had to use a joystick."

When asked if Valve was looking to put Natal compatibility in any of its future Left 4 Dead games, Faliszek added:

"We'll see. You won't have to make the arm movement of sawing off a zombie's head in some tiresome mini-game. I can promise you that."

Check back on CVG later this week for our full interview with Faliszek.

Upon first read that sounded vitriolic...

But then I re-read this line:

Don't just make sh*tty games I wouldn't want to play if I had to use a joystick.

QFT! OK, look waving your arms around is all well and goob, but if that's the ONLY point of the game, who cares?

Make a worthwhile experience and then look at how to control it?

Yeah, the title means that he slams those party games that are ****ty because all they do is rely on motion control as a gimmick, not that he slams party games in general because they are all ****ty. It's all going to rely on how Natal is used. I'm sure there will be studios that take the path of least resistance and make games that are easy just to make a buck.

I can see the appeal of [natal-based] "party" games. Personally though, I can't see myself playing any. It's tiresome and gimmicky. If anything, I'd probably play it until the novelty wears off. So I guess I'm glad Valve isn't wasting money and resources to develop something like that.

I think it depends on what they developers do with it. If it's the same type of thing that we've seen with the Live Vision camera then yeah :/ But if they come up with something that is natural as far as controls go, not gimmicky, then I can see the value.

I would buy NATAL **if** the accuracy was so good that.....I could buy Tiger Woods 2011.....let NATAL scan my personal golf clubs in, and let me play the game using my real golf clubs. It would see that I have my driver, my woods, my irons (2-9), if my hands are choking the club, my actual swing speed, my draws and fades, you name it. I would buy NATAL for that game alone, IF it has that accuracy.

I know that they showed the potential of scanning in your own skateboard, so I know the direction they are looking towards.

Something tells me they'll have to sell wrist straps for real golf clubs soon. If a Wiimote can smash a HDTV, imagine what a golf club can do. :p

On that note (golf) I think Sony will launch their motion controller with Everybody's Golf.

I wish the makers of MLB The Show would make a golf game. I bet it would SPANK EA's Tiger Woods (which I enjoy).
