Treemonkeys
I just get tired of everyone complaining about how long certain games are taking or took to make when often IMO these are some of the best games available. I have seen people complaining about the Starcraft 2 beta and how it is "too similar to the orginal" with thoughts such as "we waited this long for THIS? they could have reskined Starcraft years ago". Yeah they could have re-skinning Starcraft years ago, then it would be another old game added to the pile that most of us wouldn't be interested in now. I for one am happy to be playing Starcraft now on my modern rig, it is really just a fantastic game and a fantastic time to be playing it. That's not to say Starcraft 2 is just a reskin, it has some great gameplay changes that IMO really change the balance and pacing of the game in a way that makes it more fun while completely retaining the feel and style of the original. That and no one has seen the single player yet! Then on that note you have people complaining that they are doing three releases when "they are making us pay 3 times for the content of one game". Never mind that no one knows how long "Wings of Libtery" is or how much content it will pack, I'll bet it will be worth a stand alone release but we will have to see. Never mind that when you buy Call of Duty you can bet your ass the next version will be for sell in two years or less. It's almost like some gamers feel like they "deserve" a higher quality game based on how long they wait for it, and as it stretches past 4-5 years their expectations of what they "deserve" start going into completely unreasonable ideals. I for one am going about my daily life and enjoying other games while I "wait" for a game to be released, it doesn't really bother me how long it takes. If anything, sometimes when I see what the new hardware can do, and I think back to an older game that I just LOVE, I wish they had waited a little longer to make that game so it would have better graphics now. I remember everyone complaining about how long HL2 took, and it was well worth the wait! Now we have everyone complaining about EP3(HL3), but I am confident it will be worth it. Same thing with Diablo 2, and now Diablo 3. I mean look at Warcraft II and then look at Warcraft III, look at Half-Life and then look at Half-Life 2. That is what I would consider to be a sequel worthy upgrade. Now go look at Call of Duty 4 or MW2. Look at Halo 3 to ODST. So many games now get away with really being what an old-school gamer like me would consider to be a glorified expansion pack. It is almost like gamers today WANT to get the same regurgitated crap by throwing down $60 every year or every two years for minor upgrades to the games they already purchased than wait a longer period of time for a higher quality game. I am afraid the gaming market is turning into something where we just want something new and shiny and we want it now, who cares if it is just a slightly polished version of what we paid for last year - just as long as we don't have to wait! Maybe I am just getting old.
metal_dragen Veteran Posted February 22, 2010 Veteran Share Posted February 22, 2010 I agree - I don't mind waiting longer than your average cycle, as long as the end result is a well-made, reasonably bug-free, and quality product. My problem comes at a time like now, when there's a massive influx of quality AAA titles releasing in the same year (Mass Effect 2, Bioshock 2, Alan Wake, Dante's Inferno, Fable III, etc.) and I don't have the time and money to play all of the games that I want to get. I guess it's a good problem to have, but it still annoys me...
Yusuf M. Veteran Posted February 22, 2010 Veteran Share Posted February 22, 2010 People will always complain about something. You simply cannot please everyone. Personally, I can wait for games like StarCraft 2 and Diablo III because I know it will be worth the wait. Instead of releasing a game that isn't "100% complete", we get a game that's well-polished and relatively bug-free. Game developers like Blizzard and BioWare are known for releasing quality titles. EA, on the other hand, isn't known for that. Don't be fooled though. Simply because a game has been in development for a long time doesn't always mean it'll end up being good (quality-wise and gameplay/story-wise). +Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted February 23, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted February 23, 2010 I've never minded games developers taking time to produce an excellent game, especially those under pressure due to having sequels to contend with/hype or just general this game has to be a 'AAA' title pressure. Only thing that can frustrate is an influx of info/potential release date that then gets pushed back, but I guess as you've covered what actually matters is what you play at the end of the day. It's better to have said **** sake I waited so many years on this but it's awesome, than this is okay/good but could've been better
