The vast World of Warcraft

Expensive game. I think it's basicness is what keeps it popular.

And the social part. Playing with lots of friends, chatting with people from other countries, anal / norris joking on trade channel and stuff... :)

If that was true, all of the games like Runes of Magic would be much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much more popular.

WoW is anything but "basic" later, yes, it's one of the more simple complex pay MMOs, but, it's far from "basic".

I don't really believe those numbers on the server side of things. More specifically, the number of computers and such claimed to be used. It seems greatly exaggerated.

It looks basic, it plays basic. The only thing that adds complexity are the people that use it.

Maybe you don't know the Blizzard Mantra?

Simple to play, difficult to master.

Blizzard loves this, and all their games are based on this idea.

I think it's more like "easy to learn, hard to master". :p

Wow those stats are pretty amazing. I've been hesitant to try it out though. Every time i'm at the store I debate on buying it or not. Does it really live up to what everybody says about it?

Really? I find it to be rather acceptable considering the load, number of servers dedicated to various parts of the game, and so forth. (continents/zones, instances, battlegrounds, authentication, etc)

Given that it appears to cost them only 50 million to operate in a year's time, minus I'm guessing the cost of paying their employees that manage the game... it doesn't seem like a whole lot, especially if they're making $800 million a year, minus the Asian player base of 5.5 million. That is a lot of money...

People could say they're milking it, but can you really blame them? I mean, it's not like the game's gone downhill exactly. Personally, while I loved how things were before, I would never want to go back to a time before the LFD tool lol. Only people that seem to be angry are the elitist who aren't being catered to anymore. Oh, and let's not forget the additional (free) content that comes out for the two years in between expansions.

As if. I've yet to meet a great DPS, healer, or tank who have not read up on their class in at least some way, shape, or form.

I think it's more like "easy to learn, hard to master". :p

I'd agree with this. Some classes are just a lot easier to play than others, at least in everyone's perspective for the most part. While I think Cat DPS is a breeze, I couldn't play a warlock or priest to save my life. Doesn't stop me from trying though at least, as I did end up loving my mage after all. :)

I dunno. I just find the sheer number of servers to be rather ridiculous. Even though it probly doesn't work like this, lets just do the math of players / servers directly. Just by that it would be about 575 users per server alone which would be really low. And Even if they had multiple login servers and each ream had a separate server for each continent, the instances, and other things i still don't think it would total up to 20,000. 20,000 would almost require there to be a server for each individual zone within each continent which would be quite overkill. Not to mention would it interrupt the flow of the game as you would have to 'connect' everytime you, say, left orgrimmar to go to the barrens.

Assuming those financial figures are right, they are making roughly $750 MILLION a year in profits (that is, money after upkeep), or, 2 MILLION a DAY in pure profit.

Talk about a cash cow....

List of all the servers: http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/realmstatus/ I wont bother counting them all but each World of warcraft Realm has a:

Eastern Kingdoms server

Kalimdor Server

Northrend Server

Outland Server

Auction House / Chat

Each battlegroup (a cluster of servers) has a:

Battleground/Arena server

Instance server.
