Tretton: PS3 has proved our 10-year point

Recommended Posts

Sony America boss Jack Tretton has said that PlayStation 3's position now proves what the company was saying all along about a 10-year console cycle."I'd love to flashback to 2006 and bring people forward to 2010 and say, 'Now what do you think about Blu-ray? About the technology?'" Tretton told Fast Company.

"We've just passed the third year of the PlayStation 3 and we're just hitting our stride. And I don't think anyone is saying, 'This is a five-year cycle; what's new on the horizon?'

"I can't even imagine what can be done technically beyond the PlayStation 3 in the near future.

"A question I often get is when we are going to see PlayStation 4. When somebody can craft the technology that exceeds what we're able to do on the PS3, but we are still just starting to harness it."

Speaking of which, Tretton also compared the company's PS3 motion controller plans with those of Microsoft on Project Natal and found the latter wanting.

"We introduced motion gaming with the EyeToy for PlayStation 2. It was an incredible experience," he said.

"But it was somewhat limited in terms of the type of gaming experiences..."

"You have to tip your hat to Nintendo for introducing the motion gaming using their controllers, doing it in a more social fashion. I'm not an expert on Microsoft's technology, but we all know that it was not homegrown. It's certainly technology that we worked with before. We had the experience with the PS2 and EyeToy."

Having a controller in your hand makes the difference, Tretton argued.

"We're able to take advantage of the camera, take advantage of the ability to identity yourself in 3D space, but then have controls in hand to do things like shooting and swinging an object, and much more accurately than ever done before," he said.

"You can have it as an element of a game, you can do it as a dedicated game, you can do it in a social gaming atmosphere. There is no game where you say, 'Our control isn't going to apply there.'"

I have to agree, I can't imagine a new PS yet either. These consoles still have a lot of life in them. I think another 3 years and we should see something.

...5 years is normal. If anything, everything is becoming "un-Apple"ish.

Isn't the whole point of the 10 year cycle to still introduce something within that 10 years? Like the PS2 is in that 10 year cycle but the PS3 was introduced within it. So with that in mind shouldn't they start thinking about the PS4?

why wouldn't natal allow for a wirelless controller in one hand?

that's not what he is saying. He's saying, the PS3 Motion Controller gives you the freedom of motion controls plus be able to do things like Shoot, etc with the motion controller itself.

But yeah, Natal is designed to be played along with the controller

Yup. They'll lie through their teeth (as will MS/Ninty) right now about nothing in the pipe line. It's not like that at all. Development somewhere started even before the PS3 launched. It's how every product is born nearly.

I have only had a PS3 for six months or so However, I have noticed that more and more games and simply playing it safe with the graphics and quality of the game and only Sony games seam to attempt to push the boundary of what the PS3 can handle (much like Nintendo and the Wii)

We're just learning how to harness the PS3? You mean that complicated Cell CPU they helped develop which they have stopped supporting?

*facepalm* no they have not stopped supporting it. Please go and do some proper research.

Personally I'd be happy if they didn't reveal PS4 for another 3 years...does seem like there's plenty for developers to work with at the moment.

You can bet they are definitely thinking about it and planning it. They're not going to admit to that though.

Bring on the PS4 :)

It's still far away though. We usually get two Gran Turismo versions per playstation. GT1/GT2 = PS1, GT3/GT4 = PS2, GT5/GT6 = PS3. We haven't got GT5 yet lol

Haha, hopefully we actually will get GT5! Could all be a myth! :p

Multiplatform releases are generally hampered by the fact that they're multiplatform, and can't take the time it takes to properly take advantage of the system's strengths, which is why all exclusives generally fare better than multiplats (with gta4 and bethsoft games as an exception).

Probably because the cost of producing an even higher definition of games is way too much and will be so in the next few years.

What do you mean?

PC games already output games way higher than 1080p, which is actually quite a poor resolution. I don't even know if TV's are produced that can handle anything higher than 1080p so for games consoles thats the max output.

It's not about the resolution, it's about the game underneath - It takes so much more time to create larger and higher quality textures,

building the levels, working on the HD sound used nowadays, the multi-player aspect and all the optimization not to mention many of

the scripted sequences, actors doing voice-over / motion work, copyright and the whole shabang.

Really is expensive to create games these days.

And you still haven't got Final Fantasy XV. VII/VIII/IX = PS1, X/XI/XII = PS2, XIII/XIV/XV = PS3. :p

Probably because the cost of producing an even higher definition of games is way too much and will be so in the next few years.

Perhaps actually getting 1080p-native games is a good goal.

Never heard of a PC, eh? There is a lot that could be improved 'technically', like putting a decent amount of video memory in there, maybe putting a GPU in there from one of the last four generations of consumer cards, going to a quad-core general purpose CPU rather than the cell.

Sony are just trying to keep sales up, which is understandable, but seriously, technology that exceeds what the PS3 can do is being 'crafted' every other month. longer maybe depending on how long it takes them to farm mats.
