Have we all seen the new Steam beta layout?

It's great to use, but the In-game Overlay dies quite a lot, as well as some other bugs that need ironing out.

But WebKit! :D

I still dont understand why you need a web browser while playing games. you either play or browse the internet

Some games like Counter Strike: Source if you die early you may be sitting out the rest of the game for 3-4 Minutes or longer depending on the server settings and the time you died. So browsing while waiting to respawn etc

I am using the new UI right now. I think the features are great, but the design is unprofessional and ugly in my opinion.

I already created my own concept based on the new UI. I may post it here once I'm done tweaking it if anyone is interested.

they are using webkit instead of IE?

maybe there are some truths so steam going to OSX...

It's using the WebKit browser engine, so it has nothing to do with getting games that run on Windows to run on OSX.

What he means is, The IE Shell they used cannot run on OS X at all. So this move to Webkit (which is platform independent) fits in with the other indicators that they are intending to release a version for Mac OS X. Including Webkit would mean less code would have to be changed for making an OS X or a Linux version where as if they stayed using IE they would have to then include another browser engine for other platforms creating more work when it comes to porting future versions.

I doubt that. There's not enough market share or market share within that market share. :) People with Macs can play Steam games by booting into Windows...

Have you seen the latest information? The beta client has had its resources checked out and it includes icons for Mac OS X and they are appropriately named as OSX_Icon_xyz

What benefit would there be to that when so few games, if any, would run on OSX?

No, I don't generally poke around in beta app resources. ;) I just don't see the logic behind it.

when steam came out for windows how many games was there?

their are a lot of random indy games out there for mac and OSX is only growing as a platform. what would be the harm and having an online digital store front for games for OSX. popcap makes most of their games for OSX too, there is another way to buy them and im sure if steam becames peopular on OSX more and more deveoppers would see it as an oppurtunity, especially the indy guys. You gotta start somewhere.

That's what people said about the iPhone. Then a store showed up and 150,000 apps in 2 years. If you build a store developers will begin to create content for it. At the moment the only way to get games to OS X gamers is through your own website with advertisements you pay for on other sites or through discs in stores which requires you to have seriously large financial backing and a publisher. By having a store independent developers and even big names can produce games and release them without spending any money and having any costs they will incur paid for through a 30/70 payment model which is what Steam offers developers on Windows.

Even now on the Steam platform there are many independent developers who specifically target services like Direct 2 Drive, Steam and Impulse. I believe Valve want to be first on the OS X platform with a service like this.

But you check the news right? It's been all over Digg.com and other tech related news sites.

Sure Steam started off with a small catalog, but that wasn't my point. You're arguing that Steam started off small, but I'm arguing for the amount of games available to the platform it was released on, regardless if they were available on Steam or not.

Is it futile to get it on OSX? That's debatable. Macs didn't suddenly come about, and what little I've noticed hasn't shown a large influx of computer games going multi-platform, so I don't fully concede to the indy companies getting their name out. Common sense tells me that Valve makes much more on major studio games than third party games, but hey, I've been wrong before!

their are more games on OSX then people think, just because most of them are A titles doesn't mean they are not there.

Interface is ok but the lack of a "compact view" currently is a huge omission IMHO. If I only want to play a game I don't need the steam client taking up half my desktop (and I'd still prefer to launch via steam than have shortcuts to each of my games in the start bar)
