UltimaCJ
Console System: Personal Computer Company: Atari Status: (Completed) Approx. time: About 8-12 hours Something strange and it don?t look good! Who gonna call? GHOSTBUSTERS! When I first heard of this brand new [not really rehashed] title coming out, I was a little skeptic. If any gamer knows the Ghostbusters game series, they weren?t that very good. The games they made back in the day just didn?t live up to the name. However, that isn?t the same for this new version of the game. The first thing you?ll notice about the game is that you play a mysterious new cadet named Hoss that was hired by the team (this person is you obviously). The character doesn?t talk except giving facial expressions. When the main protagonist doesn?t talk, this can usually be a good thing or a bad thing. In Ghostbusters: The Video Game, it?s not a bad thing. The great thing about the new game is that every voice actor from the original two movies is in this game and it?s very well done. This presents in itself very well and if you are a fan of the movies, this will quickly draw you in fast. The games storyline follows as you, the new cadet, is under training. Soon as your training is done, the game really begins. It seems this games storyline takes place after Ghostbusters II. As you look around the firehouse, you?ll see noticeable artifacts (such as the Vego painting) and other such items. Atari did a wonderful job putting a lot of detail in the game. You?ll notice a lot of things from the movies. One could say the storyline could be a possible preview of a third Ghostbusters movie. In any case, it feels like you are watching part three of the movie series (you are just filling in the parts as the player). Graphically, the game puts out pretty good. You?ll see many animated crazy ghosts trying to get you as well as the environment will get dark and spooky (sometimes a little too dark). Teamwork, most of the time, is a very vital aspect to your survival in the game. If one of your teammates gets knocked out, you have to go revive them. Of course if you have more than one teammate, the game?s AI is usually on the dime to revive them. The same goes for you, if you get knocked out, one of your Ghostbusters buddies have to come over and revive you. Should everyone get knocked out, you?ll get defeated. The game is pretty good about checkpoints, although, at certain times I wish could be able to save anywhere in the game. Teamwork usually DOES matter in some situations, but in other situations, it felt like only the main player was giving the only effort. Still, the thought of the other guys being there was great. Overall the game for the PC version was done pretty good but it?s not without its flaws. Perhaps one of the biggest mishaps of the game, if you are defeated, the game has to RELOAD everything again. Which is, in my opinion, very frustrating, especially for some of the boss battles. In any game, it is not fun waiting up to 15-30 seconds to reload the level where you get defeated. Still it?s not as bad as Burnout Revenge (which takes up to a MINUTE to load again). I had trouble getting the game to run at full settings as I had to scale down the resolution on my system. Being that as it may, I can run Crysis at full resolution and most settings are set to high. Yet Ghostbusters seems to drag on a bit at times. This problem wasn?t as bad when I scaled down the resolution. These were the only two aspects of the PC version that felt ?rushed?. Control at times felt ?stiff?. This usually only a problem when you have to fight in close quarters or make quick reflexes. Then again I suppose realistically, you ARE carrying a 100 pound proton pack on your back the entire time. Last but not least, unlike the other versions of this game, there?s no multiplayer which is a damn shame. If you are a fan of the Ghostbusters series, you will most certainly enjoy this game to the very end. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Graphics : 1.000/1.000: Great graphics. Ghosts are colorful. Facial expressions on all the actors (and the main player) are done very well. Nothing looks cheesy in this game (well at least not in a BAD wayJ) Sound: 1.000/1.000: From fast pace to spooky music. The game presents very well. It?s also nice to hear the original music from the old school movies. Sound effects are also done very well. The game designers did their homework. You?ll hear the original zaps and boos and all that in this game. Control: 0.700/1.000: At times, the control felt very stiff. Overall the fluid and motion of the game?s control wasn?t bad but at times it wasn?t great either. Storyline: 1.000/1.000: Wonderful storyline and wonderful adaption from the original movies. The writers did a great job doing a continuation in this game. Characters are colorful (such as Peter) are wonderfully well done and the storyline just sucks you in wanting to finish the game. Gameplay: 0.470/1.000: Sadly, this is the only aspect that hurts the game. If you can get passed these aspects, the game is very well done to the very end and I overall did enjoy it. First off, was the reloading times. I can understand if I pick a new level the game has to load that level, but if I die on the current level and restart from the last checkpoint?.? Why do I need to wait up to 30 seconds to try again? I can understand on older machines this being a possible problem, but on newer machines (dual core or higher) that?s no excuse. This was the first game that I had to scale down my resolution lower than originally because the games frame rate would bog down. At times, the game does throw more stuff at you than you can handle at times (even with your buddies). This can get frustrating at times so be prepared. As I stated earlier, NO multiplayer! I?ve seen on many forums people want this to happen, although I seriously doubt that will happen. Lastly, the game is pretty short and any player can blaze through it in about 7-12 hours. It?s short but sweet. *Editors note: Graphics settings are based on a 22" WS LCD Monitor. 1680x1050 Totals: 4.170/5.
LOC Veteran Posted February 27, 2010 Veteran Share Posted February 27, 2010 Er NM on that, for some reason the bottom of your post was cut off and I didn't see that you mentioned the no MP part. I think K-Meleon don't like the new forum to much :p
Draconian Guppy
what sort of hardware did you run this on ? No multiplayer mean no Co-OP? I definitely enjoyed the ghost buster movies and based on your review I think I will give it a shot! As like you I was very skeptic and reviews around the net haven't been too good either to shell out for a subpar game, but it seems it's well worth it. If it get's me to believe i'm an actual Ghostbuster then bring it on!

Core 2 Duo (2.8 Ghz) 4GB DDR 800mchz Video: Radeon HD 4670 512MB No multiplayer meaning no co-op (local or online) or against each other (local or online). In the PC version, it's completely strip from the game. I believe the price of the game is a budget title (19.99), so it's def worth the buck. However, if you looking for multi-player action though, it's not in the PC version. I wasn't so thats why I got the PC version. Also in the opening credits the game was written by two of the actors, one of them being Dan Arkyrod (spelling lol). Hope this helps.
