BoneyardBrew Member Posted February 27, 2010 Member Share Posted February 27, 2010 If I was given a chance to redesign the Steam UI freely, adding whatever features I wanted, this is what it would look like. :D Features: Windows Vista and Windows 7 Aero Integration. - Streamlined Steam Client with a refined navigation bar featuring new styled buttons and navigation links. - Application Pinning: Pin your favorite games to the main window so that you can access them from any location within Steam. A counter next to the pinned application gives the user a quick overview of how many friends are currently playing that game. - New Friends Location: Integrated into the top bar for easy access. User's avatar acts as a replacement for the "User's Account" link, and brings you to your account page. - Redesigned Store for a cleaner, more professional appearance. Each picture has it's own borders and styling to improve the overall appearance of the store. - Download Overview with transfer rate integrated into the bottom status bar. I'd like to know what everyone thinks! Duality and ViZioN 2 Share
SMELTN
I wish it was possible. I think it looks great, and have been looking for a great Steam UI, but can't find one.
+John. Subscriber¹ Posted February 27, 2010 Subscriber¹ Share Posted February 27, 2010 IMO it's the one thing that's left to change to the Steam platform. The UI is so ass-backwards it hurts sometimes. I don't know why, it just doesn't look nice.

John Freeman
Dooo eeet! Thou I like steam store better as it is naow. But when it comes to skining - even thou their current skin might not be the greatest, this update is just godsend in terms of customization. I mean - you can edit almost everything! noroom
I take it you guys haven't opted into the UI Beta? It's fantastic, though not as good as the screenshot posted here. BoneyardBrew, submit that to Valve and tell them you'd gladly provide them with the necessary images to make it come true. Who knows, maybe they're hiring UI designers, and this could be a nice addition to a portfolio.

I posted it on the Steam Beta UI's subforum on the official site, but that doesn't guarantee they will see it. I will attempt to email someone from Valve and maybe they can redirect me to the correct department. snip Looks pretty close to what theyve done already :) I did base it off of this, so the navigation links and store design do look very close to what they already have, just more refined in my opinion. They're hiring a UI Designer. I would love to apply for that job, but I don't meet a couple of the requirements for it :(.

SMELTN
I can put you in contact with the right people at Valve. I have worked with them pretty heavily in the past. Let me get home and put in a phone call, I will pm you later today.

undu
It's great overall, but there are some things that don't work in your mockup: 1. The selecetd category should be more prominent. 2. There's no room for subcategories, like in the current beta. 3. Having pinned games in the same visual element as browsing categories using text is a no-go, putting just numbers right next to them is also a bad idea, there's no clear way to tell their meaning. (Friends playing it right now, friends that have the game, hours I've spent last week with it) 4. Options like setting up a game list view or selecting a particular list apparently dissapears, that's no good either. I know that right now the beta uses too much screen for what it does, but your sacrificing too much, in my opinion. ;)
The Teej
I don't say this very often, but I would gladly pay for a skin like that - say around the ?5, maybe even ?10 mark. That really does look awesome!
plasmarox
It looks excellent - i would much prefer this over the current beta UI, which seems broken to me. I would actually downgrade to the old UI than use the beta, but yours is a big improvement.
HawkMan
Like the old and the actual new steam ui, it needs properly sized and placed window widgets. apps who use their own silly size and position widgets should be banned. when manually minimize several windows in a row, I expect to be able to click the same place in the upper right corner, not having to move my mouse to minimize steam, then move it again so I don't close instead of minimize the app beneath. I know that right now the beta uses too much screen for what it does, but your sacrificing too much, in my opinion. ;) 1. The glow effect on the selected category is different enough visually to determine that it is the selected link in my opinion. 2. You are right, but this is just the store and there are no subcategories to select within it so that is not necessary. Once you select a different category that requires such space, for example, the Library category, the nav-bar area would grow to compensate for the needed space. This would prevent extra space from being displayed when it is not needed. 3. I was only able to use text in my concept because I was unable to find decent transparent game icons. I still don't think this is much of a problem considering the fact that the navigation links are far larger and has a divider representing that it is a seperate area. I clearly stated in the description that the number represents the friends playing that game now. When you hover over it, it would pop out with the specific friends that are playing that game. 4. The Store has no view options that I could find, so obviously they wouldn't be in a concept that is focused on that page. I appreciate the feedback, but I feel that most of your points aren't valid. Everyone has their own opinion though, and I cannot shoot you down for that. Nice! This is so much better than the current beta UI. Thanks! I don't say this very often, but I would gladly pay for a skin like that - say around the £5, maybe even £10 mark. That really does look awesome! Wow, thank you! That means a lot! Thank you! If the new beta is definitely going to look like it does now, I would rather them just use the old theme with the new features of the beta. I agree with you, I find that to be annoying as well.
