Google provides an online submission form where the URL of a site can be submitted, or it is also possible to submit a website through its sitemaps program, but it can often be better to get a site linked from an existing domain on Google, so that the Googlebot spider will find the site through its travels around the web. Bing, Yahoo and any other search engine use a similar system.

Search engines are able to deep index complex websites, either on the first visit or after several updates, including pages within a frame. It will also index PDF documents hosted on a site..

They will use the content on a website to determine search term relevance, but it will also use external factors such as inbound links as a key element. Inbound links will also be used for quality and relevence, making it hard for new websites to establish high ranking positions immediately, but can also create very reliable and relevant results.

Factors to consider to achieve a high ranking;

Use relevent keywords within the title tag of each page

Consider the position and emphasis of keywords within your content

Create a defined 'theme' for the site, including the number of pages indexed and the use of keywords throughout

Seek a listing on the Open Directory with a keyword relevant description

The number of inbound links from other relevant and and established websites are especially important.

Here are a couple of steps that will help...

1. Well coded site with proper structure i.e. Headings in header tags, text in p tags, title attributes for links, alt attributes for images and meta tags with relevant info. Meta tags have been abused pretty badly to the point where search engines may not care about them any more but never the less its better to have them.

2. Static links. In my experience I have noticed that links which appear dynamic such as index.php?page=5&category=cats etc have low priority when it comes to indexing. So it would help to have links that appear static like category/cats/page/5

3. Keywords in proper places. It would help to have keywords in h1 and h2 tags and title attributes of links and alt attributes of images. That being said do not over do it because it will result in black listing and all sorts of unnecessary pain.

4. Make sure your pages are snappy and quick. The spiders won't index the pages if they can't get to them.

5. Links from relevant sites. A link from a relevant site assuming the site has good reputation will add to your site's standing. So it will help to post comments on blogs with a link to your site. This can turn in to a nightmare pretty quickly if the site linking to yours is not relevant.

Hope this helps.

Hello again

Thanks for the info - much appreciated.

The company I work for was accquired over a year ago. Our 'new' head office claims that if we require a higher ranking in the search engines that it is going to cost us thousands of pounds.

Unfortunately I have been tasked to investigate our options with limited information being passed from our marketing dept.

It is impossible to attain high rankings instantaneously. It is something that is acquired over time. If you want to appear high up in search results tomorrow adwords would be the way to go and the cost is going to depend on the amount of competition in your area.

Put it this way, if you want to be on top of the rankings then post good stuff that other great sites will link to your stories and therefore rank you up. You can't go to the top of Google just because you want to be. It's funny when my friends ask me about building a site for their boyfriend's company and want it to be the top result and when i tell them it's not gonna happen they look at me like i'm just saying that or something.

Great site or not, people wont know about you unless you:

  1. Advertise
  2. Proper site setup and management
  3. Linked by other sites
  4. Social Networked (Dugg, Slashdotted, etc.)

So just start working on that site. Some advertising is free (word of mouth and links in your signatures) but the rest you might have to pay for.

matt one very important factor is the level of competition of your niche, just an example,if your niche is credit cards, or viagra , its going to be extremely hard, and expensive if you choose a paid advertising approach such as adwords, most likely at a level you wont be able to compete with the other titans competeting against one another.

One advise I give to you though, is to write some press releases online and articles, there are paid and free services available online which I have personally seen good results in the quality of the target traffic it produced, which generated me profit of course.

Try writing about your website at the following websites.
