+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted March 1, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted March 1, 2010 I had it on once already and got the network error. Then I wanted to try it again to see if it was a problem in Killzone as well. From the last time I turned it on, until now, I didn't have a video reset issue. Seems that it reset my XMB because now it doesn't even have my them loaded. The date as you can see in the video I am putting up is 12/31 at 533pm. Fair enough but you're playing with fire when you know you have a fat, turning it back on and messing around multiple times when you've been advised not to. Hedon
Well, if my date doesn't change to the proper date in that 24 hour period, I wonder what happens next. I heard that firmware updates are not part of the PSN Network. Some people on a forum said that you don't have to be connected to PSN to get a firmware update, just a connected PS3. I can't confirm that to be true though. They are saying the firmware network is separate from the PSN network.
Emn1ty
So, how bad do you think this can actually get? A few game save datas corrupted or a huge system Brick? I guess it depends on what level this effects the system. Hopefully this doesn't earn the "of death" designation. The last thing we need is another one of those, especially one that pretty much kills off all remaining backwards compatible PS3's. @audio - Would that not be voiding your warranty, messing with your own hardware? If this problem does brick your PS3 even after that fix, you just lost all hope of getting it replaced. I'm not saying it will or saying I think it will, but with a problem this strange messing with crap that will render Sony customer service useless is probably something you should avoid. The internal clock date will be fixed by Sony in a FW update at a later point. Internal clock date is pretty much useless to us, it's irrelevant to our experience, however unfortunately it's now gone and caused a bug due to manufacturing in the fat PS3s. Sony have another 4 years to fix the bug after this  @audio - Would that not be voiding your warranty, messing with your own hardware? I doubt anyone with a fat still has a warranty, and it's just to show it's a date related bug, it will not brick your PS3.

Ever heard of extended service plans? You know, the ones you get on the distributors end? Open your PS3 like that and all those are voided. Not to mention if it does become something as bad as the RROD, you have now just voided any extension they put on the warranty anyways. With computers and electronics in general, never assume things are simple. Some of the strangest crap can happen from the smallest problems. Better safe then sorry. jswalker2
I must be the only one here with a fatty that actually works, although it was sent in for repair a few weeks back, and the date was wrong when it returned, so chances are the CMOS battery was removed during the repairs but im happy :)
Emn1ty
As it appears to be a manufacturing defect, wouldn't that mean they are obliged to fix affected units even when out of warranty? Not if you open it up yourself and mess with it. They have no obligation to fix tampered hardware. You do that reset and they have a way of telling you did so, they can easily write you off. That is how corporations work. Anything that will save them money. Especially if it is the PS3 which has hit Sony pretty hard.

There's countries where you have a mandatory 2 year warranty and a lot of fat models definitely ain't that old.

It doesn't delete your accounts on the hard drive or anything, it just resets the time/date/video settings and some other basic stuff. And @ Everyone replying to me about warranties, don't open your PS3 if you have a warranty then, it's just proof of concept it's a date/cmos related issue that can be fixed. If you watch the video you'll see that yourself. Your internal clock will rollover to March at GMT 00:00 which is why it's believed it should then connect successfully to PSN again. SuperJediMedia
I heard other places their PS3 got bricked, but I am not sure if that's a wide-spread issue or had anything directly to do with this issue might be they tried to modify things to caused it to brick
