MLB10: The Show

Recommended Posts

Assuming we can play games by Tuesday, I just ordered this from Amazon. MLB09 was fantastic, although I stopped playing after my YLOD deleted by zomgawesome RTTS pitcher on his way to 15 straight wins to start his 2nd big league season.

Anyway, I know some others on here played 09, are you picking up 10? I actually only ordered it because I had like $80 in amazon gift cards, plus $10 promo from my Bioshock 2 purchase, so I got MLB10 and Episodes From Liberty City combined for $8.

Trophy Listing seems plat-able, much more than last year. - http://www.ps3trophies.org/game/mlb-10-the-show/trophies/

BTW, 09 servers go down on march 17th. If anyone needs online trophies before then, lemme know, maybe we can work something out.

I'm buying it, but I don't if I'll do so tomorrow.

MLB 09 The Show is the only game on the PS3 that I play all year long.

About your pitcher, I've got an RTTS pitcher that wins around 30 games every season LOL

I wished I knew more about/liked Baseball everyone keeps talking about how good MLB is :p

Maybe in Florida in May I might just buy it and see if I enjoy it. I don't think Sony release it in the EU do they?

I'm picking it up tonight at the midnight Battlefield release. Can't wait. I don't usually start anything major (season, franchise, RTTS) until the end of spring training though. I'm anal about having accurate rosters going into the season.

I don't think so. I know a few people that play it, but they import it from another location.

You're missing out. It's a very good sports game in general. It's accurate, deep and the presentation has really improved over the years. It's one of the few sports games that accurately recreate their real life counterpart.

Edit: It's early and I can't spell.

Just got my copy today. If anyone wants to play online, add me - soniqstylz. I warn you, I actually am a Yankees fan (I nearly was able to get my fiance to let me give my son the middle name of Sanderson, Derek Jeter's middle name), so I would be playing as them.

I am SO disappointed in this game. I mean seriously, animation stutters when you are pitching and swinging? Seriously? That is all I can really say. I was maybe going to buy this game from Gamefly since it was a rental but that is an absolute show stopper IMO. I honestly cannot believe it.

Played a bit last night, didn't notice it during gameplay, but during - for lack of a better word - cut scenes showing a pitcher warming up, the animation looked kinda funky. And I've seen in gameplay videos, again during "cut scenes" after an out or something, a noticeable stutter. Nothing that takes you out of it, I saw worse in Heavy Rain.

Haven't played enough to compare it to last year's game, which was spectacular, but the reviews so far say it's improved, but that may just be an improved online mode (last year had a lot of lag issues).

My one gripe this year is that they haven't improved the "goals" section of Road To The Show. This sums up it perfectly:

The one area where this series loses a bit of its allure is in the mode selection. With the debut of My Player in MLB 2K10, the Road to the Show mode is now antiquated to a certain degree. Being able to call the game as a catcher is a cool touch, and I love the new pitching exercises, but the weekly goal format could use a shot of the realism that the rest of the game exhibits. Having my pitcher work on improving his bunting ability before his fastball is an odd thing for a manager to ask.

I wouldn't call it antiquated (My Player appears to be a complete rip-off of RTTS), but they do have it right as far as the attaining certain stats to be called up. For those who haven't played MLB:The Show, you create a player who starts out in minor league AA ball (2 steps from the majors). You get points for attaining certain context-specific goals (for instance, coming into the game with a runner on 2nd, and not allowing him to score), plus other in-game actions (striking out x-amount of batters) give you even more points. Your coach then gives you 2 - 3 weeks to earn and use those points to build up certain stats, and it's always something odd like bunting or fielding, instead of my curveball. But once you've met those goals, you can put your points anywhere during the rest of that time frame. Continue meeting your goals, and you get promoted to AAA, and so on.

Literally like 75% of the swings I took, there was a very, very noticeable stutter between the swing and the animation. And with the pitching it was about 50%. I really wish I had a capture card so I could show it. Maybe I will take some video of it with my little Webbie and see if I can make it look decent.

The one and only thing I can think of is this was the first game I played, it was after the 360 MB patch and right after it installed, so perhaps that had something to do with it. I will check again but to say I was utterly disappointed was an understatement, as pitching and batting are the biggest parts of a baseball game, and if there is a fundamental flaw with them, the game is broke IMO.

So I will try it again, I really do hope it was something with the fact I had just loaded the update and installed the game. It was also just an Exhibition game, but not sure that should matter any.

EDIT - Okay good news, it had to be the patch and the install that for whatever reason was messing it up. Perhaps they should have restarted the game or suggested to though, as that was a truly awful first impression and if people did not respond saying they were not having the issue, I would have sent it right back to Gamefly and never touched it again. It was truly that bad. It did seem so off to me though since I had heard more than once this was the definitive baseball game. So glad that is sorted out for sure.

I was gonna say, I played a bit more last night, never noticed anything major, even during HR Derby the swings were fluid (although I hate Babe Ruth's batting stance).

K, if anyone wants to, I'm gonna set up a Neowin baseball league -- we only need 6 people max, play three games and we get the "Much Better This Year..." trophy. Then if anyone really wants, I can set up a league for real, but I may be a bit busy to get on something long-term, what with God of War and BF:BC2, as well as the RTTS and Franchise stuff that I get addicted to.

So tempted to get this, but I'm still working my way through RTTS in 08 (having redo loads after I lost progress when I got the YLOD a while ago). Skipped 09 (got it then sold it) for the same reason. If I don't get it this year I'll definitely get it next year.

I have a RTTS pitcher. This is the first time I've owned The Show as I just recently got my PS3. The pitching is rather difficult. I find that sometimes I'll completely screw up on the meter but will throw a K, or I'll nail it and throw out of the zone (with like a circle change aimed stright down the middle). I understand that the accuracy depends on the pitcher's skill but I feel like what I do with the controller doesn't seem to make much of a difference. I played the 2K10 demo and enjoyed the pitching and batting controls more, but definitely prefer the presentation of the show not to mention the RTTS mode.

When do they normally promote to AAA or Bigs? I'm through my first season, I had most wins, most SO, highest WP in AA.

EDIT: Oh, and be prepared to throw a LOT of foul balls. The batters are super roid-rage aggressive in this game. They will swing at anything in the strike zone and lay off of basically everything outside the strike zone. That part makes the game extremely frustrating, because its common to get into 10 throw pitching battles.

That's normal. You're a minor league pitcher. Your accuracy isn't there yet. You can't expect to be completely accurate when you're in your first full year. If the game just relied on your ability to use the meter, this game would be boring.

Attributes/training count more than numbers. When your attributes are at an OK level, you'll be promoted. That will probably happen in your second year at some point.

Your playing minor league hitters. Minor league hitters swing a lot. That's the biggest difference between MLB and minor league hitters.

This game is a very accurate baseball sim. It's not going to let you off the hook easy, especially if you're playing on a level higher than veteran.

Well, yeah. The problem is the game feels like the meter doesn't matter at all sometimes. I do get the feeling that releasing the ball above the meter line makes the ball break higher, and vice versa depending on the typical breaking direction of the pitch.

Ok, I finished my first year and a AAA rotation was part of the contract renegotiation.

I've been to hundreds of minor league games and my stepfather was in the minors when I was a kid, I don't recall seeing pitchers toss ~100-120 pitches by the sixth. Nor do I remember batters swinging at every pitch. They may swing alot, but they would still swing alot then even when the ball is out of the zone. In the Show they tend to be extremely good at laying off of 'just outside' pitches and using fouls to force deep pitch counts.

S*iiiiiiiiiiiiit, I have in on whatever the regular setting is. I enjoy the game, but I'm not a glutton for punishment. I would have gone through 10 controllers in the first twenty minutes had I set it above normal. While I do enjoy sports games, they bring out the most destructive side in me(coming from a Marine I believe that says a bit). Madden has claimed quite a few controllers, mostly from times when it isn't being an accurate sim and things start acting funky(read: F*&*ing ret*rded). Accurate doesn't always mean harder for no reason. Higher difficulties in these games do two things, make the opposing AI harder and make your friendly AI dumber.

EDIT: I do believe that if the pitching were based on my skill at using the meter, I would be able to control the outcome of more pitches, and when I screw one up, I would be fine taking responsibility for it. This WOULD be more fun. Randomly selecting a pitch outcome based on the arbitrary skill points and making my skill using the controller meaningless is NOT fun. I understand that if my accuracy rating is not up there for the ball to be a little off my selected target but tossing way off my target when I hit a perfect 'meter' pitch just makes no sense. I want to feel like I am the one in control not the computer. Also, you'd think that skill would be affected by in game performance not just skill points.

I've been playing on All-Star and I haven't seen too many crazy pitch totals. Maybe that's the issue. Anyway, there's a slider for almost everything in this game. Adjust the contact, foul ball and patience slider to suit your needs.

I've seen them chase a lot of outside pitchers, but the count was way in my favor (0-2, 1-2). I've seen them stare a lot of strikes too. I played a game last night where I struck out four guys looking.

Oh, and yeah, I completely understand the frustration.

All-star is "normal". Rookie is "zomg Easy", veteran "easy", all-star "normal", HoF "hard", Legend "**** you mode".

I hate the meter, I prefer using the classic.

If the foul balls annoy you, adjust your sliders. You can make it so they will foul it off less.

I'm enjoying this quite a bit. Played a really exciting game online last night where I was down 3-0 and roared back with a 4-run 6th. Top of the 7th my opponent hits a deep ball, the rob home run icon appears, I time it perfectly and my center fielder jumps...ball bounces off his glove and goes over the wall for a homer. I couldn't help but laugh at that . Ended up losing the game in the 9th but it was fun. If any of you want to play a game online, add me. PSN ID is N1ghtz

Can't get this to play on my PSP running 5.00 M33-6 tongue.gif

I have no idea what you are saying, but it sounds neither proper nor legal, sir.

On another note, I started a new pitcher and made sure I ticked up all of the pitching attribs during creation. I've also been focusing on control first then velocity of pitches. I wanted to ask you seasoned veterans whether the Arm strength and Accuracy attribs have anything to do with pitching or if they are simply fielding values. Also, what the heck to K/9, HR/9, BB/9, H/9 mean or stand for or help?

K/9 = Strikeouts per nine innings

HR/9 = Home Runs " " "

BB/9 = Walks " " "

H/9 = Hits " " "
