I'd recommend just buying a whole new drive off ebay if you can, and then you just swap it out. Simple. The Blu Ray drive in the PS3 isn't hardware tagged or anything, as long as you get the right model it'll work fine. Messing around with the lasers can be tricky, I know ynnoj tried it and it didn't work for him.
Pablo2008jedi
Any links to the drive model then AB? I know you would post first was thinking of PM'ing you

I know you would post first was thinking of PM'ing you  I have no idea, he'll probably need to crack it open and check. Bearing in mind once he does that he loses his option with Sony, who do give an extra 1 or 2 months warranty on top. I think any reputable seller of a drive on ebay would as well give something of a warranty whether it's a few weeks or something. My first stop would just be checking prices of the PS3 Blu Ray drives on ebay in general, they'll probably then tell you how to check which model you have in the auctions. Coldgunner
I've been given an old 40gb system with the same issue, when I looked for a replacement drive it would cost circa ?70.
Pablo2008jedi
Yeah looking around ebay seen drives for ?60-90 unfortunately she can't afford that just now :(
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted March 2, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted March 2, 2010 Yeah looking around ebay seen drives for ?60-90 unfortunately she can't afford that just now :( I would wait, playing around with the laser unless you know what you're doing is tricky. Unless you can find someone to replace the laser for you that knows what they're doing and will do it for a bit less than ?60, but usually when you bring in labour costs it adds on a fair whack. Pablo2008jedi
Yeah, well its up to her. I just thought it would be cheaper than sony but its only a ?10-20 cheaper. GForce in Glasgow replace drives for ?90, so not that much more than buying off ebay
+jamesyfx Subscriber² Posted March 2, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted March 2, 2010 Do Sony offer any kind of guarantee with their work? Surely they guarantee the part for a year and the work for 3 months or something. If this is the case, and it's only like ?10-?20 more, then I'd get Sony to do it. Omar Hussain
it seems you may need to bite the bullet mate and take the sony option. Its the safest and the only truly guaranteed option. that way if it screws up for some reason, Sony are liable, whereas anyone else may not take responsibility. Pablo2008jedi
lol, she thinks a conspiricy as its a known issue and happened a few months after her warranty expired :p I remember the old PS1 had a design fault with plastic tracks for the laser head and sony fix it for free after the warranty ended, as I got mine fixed :p Does this issue affect all PS3 fatties? Thing with Sony is they may offer a refurb which means backing everything up before sending off. If you can get the drive fixed in the current machine no need to replace it... KoL Veteran Posted March 2, 2010 Veteran Share Posted March 2, 2010 (edited) Sony made the PS3 to break after a year????? I got two PS3. One YLOD and now the other one is not reading disks. Both after the warranty expired. I'm going to get a slim but this time I'm getting extended warranty from the store.
KoL Veteran Posted March 2, 2010 Veteran Share Posted March 2, 2010 I went to different Gamestop, Best-Buy, Wal-Mart, Toys-R-Us etc and you can't find a PS3, not even online. Now that FFXIII and GoW3 are going to be released I don't have a PS3.
Bhav
Personally, if the cost of repairing it myself/independently was over ?50, I would just go with Sony. That way, you get a 3 month warranty (at least), and you can be sure it'll be fixed...rather than poking around yourself and potentially worsening the problem. I went to different Gamestop, Best-Buy, Wal-Mart, Toys-R-Us etc and you can't find a PS3, not even online. Now that FFXIII and GoW3 are going to be released I don't have a PS3. Yeah apparently there are shortages...(demand 20% higher than they expected in UK/Europe at least)
ynnoj
Guide I followed: http://forum.blu-ray.com/blu-ray-games-playstation-3/70948-un-official-ps3-laser-replacement-manual-video.html The original laser I bought off eBay was dead. Awaiting delivery of another from here.
