WLM 8 for Mac?

Recommended Posts

Can someone remember when MS said they would be releasing Windows Live Messenger 8 for Mac? I thought I read somewhere it was the first half of 2010? blink.gif

We may expect a beta this month.

... Who knows, though?

Pfft, that means 31/03/2010 23:59 hours.

We're talking about the Mac BU, though. In early June, we'll get told a beta will be released in December, and some excuse as to why they haven't even touched WLM8 yet.

Apple delays software releases = no big deal

Microsoft delays software releases = M$ is evil, etc.

Unfortunately for Mac users, the platform isn't a priority for Microsoft (or Adobe, for that matter.) WLM8 will probably come at some point, but I wouldn't expect it anytime soon, simply because the Mac doesn't make up a large portion of Microsoft's revenue.

I just hope they incorporate webcam properly.. along with multiple points of presence and syncing of contact details (nicknames, etc).

That and make it work between PC/Mac easily like Skype.

One can only hope. Also, if anyone from the MS Mac BU is reading this: Please make the Messenger:Mac 8 UI less fugly than version 7. Thanks in advance.

Tell me, when, in recent years, did Apple delay announced software by over a year? Especially something simplistic as an IM client. Your comment doesn't hold ground to begin with as people complained like crazy when Mac OS X Leopard and Snow Leopard didn't hit GM within the time that was promised.

I don't remember any delay from Apple like this.

+1 and even if the MBU wasn't busy they wouldn't just jump in and help with Windows stuff :P

Yes, they have a department for the Mac (Mac BU), but the Mac platform isn't Microsoft's main source of revenue, thus it's not a priority to them to always release software on time for the Mac platform. You see the same thing with Adobe... How CS4 was 64-bit ready for Windows but not Mac. Plus, the Mac BU is a relatively small team compared to other departments at Microsoft.

Get your facts straight: Adobe was unable to release a 64-bit version of Creative Suite 4 because Apple suddenly decided to drop 64-bit Carbon support in Mac OS X Leopard at the very last moment. Adobe couldn't just swing the entire project over to Cocoa in time, hence the decision to delay it until Creative Suite 5 which will be largely rewritten in Cocoa. It had absolutely nothing to do with priority or revenue...

At the WWDC show last June, however, Adobe & other developers learned that Apple had decided to stop their Carbon 64 efforts. This means that 64-bit Mac apps need to be written to use Cocoa (as Lightroom is) instead of Carbon. This means that we'll need to rewrite large parts of Photoshop and its plug-ins (potentially affecting over a million lines of code) to move it from Carbon to Cocoa.
