Activision: Warcraft could become 'obselete'

Recommended Posts

Activision has warned that World Of Warcraft could become 'obsolete' due to advances in the way consumers play games.

In the 'Risk Factor' section of the company's Annual Fiscal Report, filed yesterday, the firm wrote:

'We compete with other forms of interactive entertainment, such as casual games like iPhone applications and other mobile phone games, and games developed for use by consumers on social networking sites.

'Future increased consumer acceptance and increases in the availability such games or other online games, or technological advances in online game software or the Internet, could result in a decline in platform-based software and negatively impact sales of our console and hand-held products. Newer technological advances in online game software may also render products such as World of Warcraft obsolete.

'Additionally, direct sales of software over the Internet by competitors could adversely affect our distribution business.'

Warcraft's MMO rivals admitted in January that no current title has a chance of 'toppling' the series.

Now they're attacking their "own" franchises, I think this is officially "Activision Day"

Hmm i would like to see Activision release a MMO which could kill WoW.

Although to be honest, games like "Mafia Wars", "RuneScape" and "FarmVille" have a combined userbase of over 100 Million People. So i guess it will grow and grow.

I can see where they are looking however, WoW might not have Micro Transactions (sorta lately they have added purchasable pets) however, the monthly fee is rather high which is good for them to make loads of money from it.

World of Warcraft (or any game really) would only become obsolete if their companies let them.

Blizzard puts a ton of effort to expanding the usability of WoW. For example, they are developing a web based app and iphone app that will allow you to manage and interact with the auction houses in game. Also with Battle.net they already do, or will in the future allow for cross gaming chat. Meaning I can be playing WoW and chat ingame, to a friend playing Starcraft 2 (when it comes out).

As long as they keep producing and can keep a customer base, they won't have to worry.

i'm pretty sure the audience for WoW and Farmville differ enough that WoW (or some contender) will do just fine. I do belive Activision is now officially run by the accountants...

It will become obsolete one day. No doubt about it. But when?

The last MMO king (EverQuest) reined for about 6-7 years before it was finally dethroned by WoW. That game is STILL having expansions released. It's also had several engine updates and graphic updates throughout the years.

WoW could still have a lot of life in it.

,.

I think 12.5 million subscribers, and more to come with Cataclysm begs to differ.

Of course if the new Blizzard MMO turns out to be something worth while, we'll see what happens.

No game is forever. And surely blizzard has profited so well from that game, that even if it died today they could still have enough resources to cook something else...star craft online :D

I'm a WoW player, and i've tried these "games" like farmville, mafia wars etc etc.....I just dont see the attraction in them at all, they're not even really games. I cant stand the micro payments in your face attitude of them at all. Not to mention you may check them once maybe twice a day for 5 minutes but thats all you can do in them. I just dont see them as the way forward at all. I for one don't wanna see a world with only games copying that model as standard. They are cheap and nasty, poor coding, and money grubbing piecies of sh*t.

I agree with you about all "these" games. If that's the best the future has to offer, I want the past back right now.

Actually, I think it's possible. The game is nothing like it use to be and I know quite a few people who have quit major guilds because they feel the same way. WoW won't live forever.

I doubt anyone in Blizzard likes this comment. They've been so dedicated at improving the game, improving all their games, and one of your "own" people to tell you this, its just stupid.

Hey Activision, maybe someone thinks about their games as art, not as money making thing. Ever thought of that?

/fanboy rant, but its true. :)

WoW is an.. interesting game. The graphics are not getting harshly out of date - because of the unique art style even though the graphics themselves are not the best, they can still churn out beautiful set-pieces and atmospheres. The gameplay will hold up for a while longer, and they are adding new features to draw players in and keep them. While WoW will not last forever, i can see it remaining strong until Blizzard decides it's done with expansions and focuses 100% on the new MMO (which i have heard is a MMOFPS?)

WoW maybe 5 years old, so its bound to appear on the surface as dated. But no other game, still tops the postings after 5 years. Not to mention the effort and content they continually put into it to keep it fresh, which is where other MMO's severely fail !

Would I like to see another MMO better it?.....ofc I would, but until they apply the same level of dedication as Blizzard do, it'll never happen.

I'm on and off that game quite often, every few months I play it for a bit then leave again. It's becoming way too easy if you ask me, it's always been a big grind game. I'm really hoping that something is released that will top it. I've got high hopes for the Warhammer 40k MMO that THQ have got lined up for 2012 (I think), though there certainly isn't enough stuff about that.

People have been saying WoW will become "obselete" for quite a while, I remember when someome published that they their subscriptions had peaked, then it turned out they were wrong - good stuff.
