Keylogger on forum

Recommended Posts

Two out of three computers I use have found a keylogger. I believe it was at least one of the many links posted in this jokes forum that transfers the keylogger. The keylogger activity was found by the safeguards at my work place. I downloaded and updated my AV at home and have found the keylogger on one computer at present, I am doing the same on my second computer. I wanted to share this malicious activity as it surprises me that people on this forum would post such things. It was an eye opener.

Shouldn't this be in Forum issue section?

Mods can move it there if they like, but it seems more relevant to have people clicking on links in the jokes section to be aware. I don't believe the keylogger is on the site but rather in one or more of the links posted in the jokes section.

I think my desktop has the keylogger as well. People be aware that clicking on pictures these days can deliver a malware to your computer. Not to mention that a malware can be transferred by clicking a link. As an IT professional it was eye opener for me to experience first hand the training I went through. I feel like an ass for letting my guard down. BTW, I'm now using four AV and spyware.

This sounds like a lot of bull****. These aren't the Outlook 2000 and Windows 98 days where you could get a virus by simply opening an email or visiting a webpage. Viruses don't just download and install themselves; you have to initiate that action.

More likely is that it's either a false-positive or the OP has been running untrusted software or games on his computers. And running multiple anti-malware software is a great way to cause unusual results.

If you really think the forum is autoinstalling keyloggers, then care to provide an example file from your quarantine? What virus, exactly, does it say you have? Where was it located on your computer? What browser were you using?

Not saying it has anything to do with this forum, but I have also been having a lot of weird happenings to my system lately, port 135 dcom attacks, and the latest, I go out, come back and comodo is asking me this

Doesn't look like a problem to me. Do you have a game called Pac Man World 3 installed?

This has absolutely nothing to do with any website.

Yea I do, thats why I was worrying, someone remotely uninstalling my stuff ?

This has nothing to do with our site. I'd suggest creating a thread on your issue.

As the OP, nobody else has reported this issue. Which leads me to believe this also unrelated to our site. If you were infected via a link posted in the Jokes forum, many others including staff would have been as well. We'd be hearing a lot more about it, and all our virus scanners would be going nutty. They aren't.

However, if you could provide a history of the links/threads you viewed in the Jokes area, we can review them to be sure.

Actually yes you can get infected these days just by visiting an infected site, even without clicking anything. It happened to my mother recently with Firefox 3.6 with Adblock Plus installed and my custom filters.

All she did was go to http://www.seattlepi.com/ from her bookmarks and before she could click anything else, one of those fake anti-spyware apps popped up.

And no her system was not infected before that.

Can Linux get infected with key-loggers?

If you're smart enough to download and run one (which might involve having to manually set it as executable, because Linux doesn't use an .exe extension like Windows), then yes.

Yes, but it is orders of magnitude less likely than on a windows-based machine.

That is an even less likely attack vector on a linux machine.
