Sessler's Soapbox: Is the PS3 Glitch a Sign of Things to Come?

Recommended Posts

This week on Sessler's Soapbox, Adam is talking about The PlayStation 3 glitch. He's not focused so much on the short term implications of the now past problem, but the cloud it casts over downloadable games, streaming, connectivity and online play.

Adam's point is that maybe there is some value in actually having physical media that will reliably play, as opposed to digital copies.

Don't think so. It was just a error in the code and the same thing happened with the original Zune's from Microsoft. A simple firmware update fixed that and it should fix this also.

In the future they will be more cautious. Hopefully.

This is more about a hardware error that, from what I understand, kept people from also playing their physical media. On the flip side if something happens to your physical media, you're screwed. If it's a digital copy it will probably get fixed quickly.

I dont like buying digital media. It is very convenient, yes. Who wouldn't want a physical copy of something. if not just to have something to hold. I like the idea of always having something. I have a shelf full of retro games, from long dead systems. I love that I have that collection. They dont even make it worth your while to skip on the physical media. Alot of times these companies charge the same amount you could by the game in the store for, just to download it. Not to mention being able to buy it cheaper used. If I were ever to buy digital, it would have to be at a pretty good price cut over going to the store.

Depends. If it's like Steam, where I can re-download it again later, awesome. But if it's DRM limitations, screw that mess. I like being able to take games over to friends' houses, or let them borrow it.

But I'm not at all worried about my blu-rays, they're hard for me to **** up, and my son has even figured out how to get the disk out of the PS3.

I'm all for physical media - the space taken up by cases is rarely overwhelming (unless you have in excess of 150 games) as unused games can be stored.

There can be a harmonious mix of the two, but it's up the people behind the show to make that happen.

Digital for indie titles, physical for more expensive, that's the way I go for now :)

This. I don't mind digital distribution but I don't like losing the ability to share games with friends.

That's my feelings on it as well. I like the portability of physical media.

For games I prefer the hard-copy, that way I can always resell/trade-in

Movies I would actually prefer digital, but in that case I would like to pay for the movie once and get several quality versions like 1080p for my main TV, 720p for the TV in my bedroom, a version for iPhone and other portabel devices, no DRM so can be played on anyone on my PC's/Laptops.

Unlike just now several movies come as a seperate BLuRay and DVD which means I need to buy it twice and then rip the dvd for my iPhone. I've only seen the odd BluRay box that comes with a DVD and digital copy included, Disney I think do them.

I have Dark Knight, Matrix, and Crank 2 like that as well.
