Kudos to Valve. About time OSX got some backing by a major game studio (other than id) - the old argument about 'macs not being able to play games' has only ever been because no-one was developing for them! With some developer weight behind it, this could change. Microsoft should be a little worried by this IMHO.

I don't think they have anything to worry about.

Most Macs aren't well equipped for gaming, and even if it comes with decent hardware, upgrading is still an issue unless you have one of those really high-end Macs. You'll enjoy gaming for a year, and then to enjoy new games you can't simply throw in a new video card, you'll be required to buy a completely different system.

That's just my take on the situation.

I'm guessing Valve will add Mac OS X support to their Source engine games (L4D2, TF2, etc) as well as announce a sequel to Portal.

On [insert date here], Valve Software will introduce Half-Life 2: Mac Edition. And you'll see why 2010 won't be like "2010".

This is huge for Apple as well as Mac gamers. Sometimes it just takes one giant name.

Having Steam support on the Mac could really start something.

Who said PC gaming is dying?

It ain't dying but it's second to console gaming though. While this is good news for Mac gamers, I'm more interested in what Valve plan to bring over and if they plan any cross platform gameplay? (i.e. if say TF2 is ported, can Mac TF2 players play against PC players?). I'll probably install the Steam client on my Mac mini even though it won't be able to play anything :p just to see what the Mac version is like

Well with all of the Portal teasers lately, plus this...and timing is decent for Orange Box 2 / $color Box, they might just have their next package be PC/Mac friendly. I would love to see Portal 2, EP 3, [New game?], TF3/Major upgrade/add on to TF2 this year :D

Not yet they're not - but I'm sure Apple and Valve are in open dialogue with each other about this. Chicken and egg type situation I guess - Apple have gradually improved their GPU's in their boxes and Valve have taken note.. if Apple start developing better gaming capable systems, I've no doubt other developers will follow Valve's lead.

I think someone on the first page said it better.. Microsoft shouldn't be worried just yet (I agree that much) but this could possibly about developing an open gaming framework which will help break away from the lockin of DirectX on Windows and that can really only be a good thing in the long term.

The next TF2 update is in the works: The engineer update. </shameless promotion of my own post>

Wow, some of those images are great!

Damn, this is the one thing that was holding me back from a Mac, no Steam and not good enough graphics. Looks like one of them is on its way, the other has a eetsy-beetsy teeny weeny way to go.

"Good times!"

That's a slight problem, but all PC laptops also have the same issue. If you're a serious gamer that always wants to play the latest and greatest on the highest settings, you've obviously not going with a Mac or any sort of laptop.

Good games these days really don't require the latest and the greatest graphics card to be playable and enjoyable. The Source engine runs very well on any of the latest MacBook Pros with discrete GPUs (the ones with both the 9400M and the 9600M GT).

The new breed of casual gamers is where the money is, and I'm sure plenty of Mac owners will buy into this (I know I will).

What if they just made the Source engine compatible with OSX? (which means a lot of games will now work)

hm, am i the only one to think that the face on the screen is not just some generic parody of the original 'Big Brother' dude?

the only existing character which comes close to such a role is Breen, but he doesnt look like that...

like, it might be a new character in the half life story

if it is Breen, then i couldnt spot his beard...............

Exactly. Also consider that some developers on Steam already have Mac ports that are good to go; for example, PopCap.

Also, epic win at the 1984 spoof.

i wouldnt expect your current purchases to still be playable.

historically not many companies put both binaries under the same key/disk ( only one i know of is Blizzard )

YES! Finally, I have a Steam account with a bunch of games, but have not been able to play due to the fact that I got ride of my PC and only have a Mac at home.
