soniqstylz
http://kotaku.com/5485450/new-tomb-raider-game-drops-tomb-raider-name Square Enix announced today that developer Crystal Dynamics is at work on a new Tomb Raider game. Except, this one isn't called Tomb Raider, the famous words nowhere to be found in the game's title.Instead, the game is called "Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light". Strange to forgo such a recognised brand, but then, it's a downloadable game, not a full retail title. And in the words of Crystal Dynamic's Darrell Gallagher, it's "something completely new and very different to what people might be expecting". Add in the fact the name isn't as relevant as it once was, and maybe dropping the "Tomb Raider" thing isn't the worst idea of the week. It'll be out later this year, and there's no other information at this stage, with the game due to be shown off for the first time at GDC next week. Tha Bloo Monkee
Why does "and the guardian of light" make it sound like a fantasy game like Lord of the Rings or something? lol That's odd that they would drop it. I don't get it. POSSIBLY some kind of licensing issue we don't know of? :s
Richard Hammond
Maybe they just want a kind of a reboot, Tomb Raider games havent been great as of late.
Draken
it's a downloadable game, not a full retail title nahhh rubbish, next time they will announce it will be a new title, same as ODST. Oh just remembered I have to finish underworld :s

+jamesyfx Subscriber² Posted March 4, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted March 4, 2010 The more recent Tomb Raider games really haven't been THAT bad. They've been pretty good. Angel of Darkness was shocking, but that's pretty much the only low point in the series. In my opinion anyways.

NikkiRox
Veeery interesting. Could turn out like an rpg-ish "fable" type game... by the sound of the title. I haven't really liked the newer Tomb Raider games, they just seem too easy, the first games on PS seemed harder... but then again, that was 13-14 or so years ago now. lol... maybe I'll get back into playing Tomb Raider 2, see how hard it is now :p
giantpotato
Could this game follow the story of a young Lara Croft before she became a "Tomb Raider"? (Although previous games depict her going on adventures as a child  ) There were rumors of a new movie featuring a younger Lara Croft, maybe this ties in to that. Smigit
That is strange to drop such a recognizable name. In all honesty "Lara Croft" probably carries almost as much weight as "Tomb Raider" anyway. I'm sure anyone here that saw that name would know what the game is about.
soniqstylz
The game is an RE5-style on- or off-line co-op game. I'll post a mini-review when I get to see or play it next week. WastedJoker
Looks like they're doing a "Trine" style game?
Richard Hammond
Them screenshots are dissappointing BUT i love adventure/puzzle games im up for anything if its cheap enough especially Tomb Raider.
what
Sounds/looks like a title of a Harry Potter book.
M_Lyons10
Crystal have done a great job rebooting the series. Yes, I agree. Underworld had some rough spots, but Legend and Anniversary were really great, and Underworld had good points as well... Could this game follow the story of a young Lara Croft before she became a "Tomb Raider"? (Although previous games depict her going on adventures as a child  ) There were rumors of a new movie featuring a younger Lara Croft, maybe this ties in to that. I was wondering the same thing. And downloadable to what? The screens I've seen don't look "console quality"... Here is some information I found online about a possible leaked synopsis... http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/headlines3656.html That REALLY doesn't sound like a Tomb Raider game to me... :? soniqstylz
From that same site (I used to go there often way back when TR was more relevant, in the PS1 years), the official announcement says that it'll be shown behind closed doors, meaning I won't get to play it, but might see some gameplay. I'm trying to find where in the schedule that might be, hopefully not invite-only.
Tech Star
Why wouldn't they call it Tomb Raider though? It's logical that if they put that in the name also, it would sell more, as the name by it's self is highly recognizable.

Since it's downloadable, people may expect a full game from "TR". Lara Croft is still a recognizable name as well. Plus, if it's a prequel, she wouldn't quite be a "tomb raider" yet, just barely legal. ;)
