banner design

Question

I'm tryin to design a banner for my personal website..now the idea that i've got in mind is this image posted below and what im tryin to do is to get heat waves going across startin from the middle of the image just about half way through the sun..goin down along the water and fadin off to the sides where the palm trees are... I wanna start doin some freelancing to make extra cash creatin websites...the name of the site will be UV Web Designs...UV being my initials so i figured UV could also stand as ultra violet rays...anyways thats the idea i have in mind...

I tried looking for some tutorials on how to do this but i couldnt find anything that explained on how to do this...i tried doin it myself using a few filters and and other stuff but im not sure i wanna go with what i got...so i figured id ask neowin since you guys are very helpful :)

Anyways if anyone could help out it would be great...thanks....

if you need more explanations on what im tryin to do just ask me...thanks again

Also, i want this banner to be widescreen but obviously not too big maybe around 200 or 300px in height and roughly500 or 600px in width... the image will have to be cropped a bit i guess so thats fine...

i think you want something more subtle but, do you mean something like this? Actually on closer inspection maybe it should be a more metalic glossy shine to it.

yea thats good but maybe showing a lil more of the palm trees on the side and the shore...but that looks great...but do u think theres a way of adding more of a wave to it...you know on a hot summer day and u look at the asphalt from far and u see those waves from the heat...thats what im tryin to get at and also wonder whether it would look good or not...but its worth a try lol

i would show u what i got but im at work atm and dont have my image with me...

Yes, heat haze I think is what you're getting at. The colours are so strong in this image (and the effect you want to achieve) I'm not sure you really want it for a banner.

That said. This is how I went about it in Photoshop.

  • Copy the image layer (cmd+j or ctrl+j)
  • Use the Pen Tool to make a path around the water and the palm trees.
  • Go to the Paths Tab and give your path a name.
  • Right click on it and Make Selection.

This makes it much easier to limit the are of your filtering.

Then go to Filter-> Distort-> Ripple and play around with it:

You could combine it with or separately use Filter -> Distort -> Ocean Ripple: I've been a bit heavy with this but you get the idea.

And with both of these you can use the Filter -> Liquify to get it more wavy.

Just play around with these till you get what you want. What does the rest of your site look like? Might be able to come up with something different

In my opinion it is all bit too 'large'.

If you shrink the whole thing down and added some highlights to the edges of the graphics it might not look so bad.

It's way too big imho. The "average" business screen is 1024x768 and IE, so you can cut a third off the 768 due to Taskbar, and IE Toolbars/Address bar/etc. At that point you are basically finning their screen with a banner, which in my experience isn't advised.

That being said, the Home Page and Landing Pages can have a large picture/banner at the top, but I would suggest if you were to go that rout, it should be relevant to the business, and ideally with some content on it about the business/product/person. At the moment it looks random, and out of place.
