SOCOM 4: It

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Just wanted to share some really exciting news with you about Zipper Interactive who recently released the brilliant MAG. The guys have busy working away on the re-envisioning of a certain military franchise that they are hugely passionate about… I'm pleased to announce that an all new SOCOM is gunning its way exclusively to PS3!

So what can you expect from this thrilling new title from Zipper Interactive? While retaining the pillars of previous SOCOM games (team work, authenticity and innovative online play) this is an all new SOCOM experience created from the ground up for the PlayStation 3. You've never played a SOCOM game like this.

Here's the story:

In South East Asia, a revolutionary army has seized control of a country bordering one of the world's most vital waterways; threatening to disrupt he global economy.

Your mission is to step into the well-worn boots of the Ops Com, a NATO Operations Commander of an elite, five-man squad. You must venture deep into inhospitable jungles, city streets and crumbling urban ruins to engage an army of rebel fighters and discover their plans. Although you're vastly outnumbered, you're armed with the latest weaponry and your men are second to none – but do you possess the stealth, speed and tactical thinking to lead them to victory? Time is not on your side: you have just six days to complete your mission. To emerge victorious, you must lead from the front, maintain control of the situation and fight with sheer intensity.

In addition to the gripping new single-player story mode, you'll find all of the different ways to play that you'd expect from a SOCOM title. Online, you'll be able to do battle with other teams in matches for up to 32 players – and you can choose to play in the guise of more world-famous Special Forces units than ever before. And – as it's SOCOM – the realism of the experience will be second to none. As always, teamwork will carry the day.

Even at this early stage the game is looking great and with a little bit of gentle persuasion the guys have kindly shared a few screenshots from the game – make sure you tune in again tomorrow as we will be unveiling, for the very first time, the EXCLUSIVE TEASER TRAILER!

Let me know what you think and of course watch this space for further intelligence!

Cheers

Richard

But he said Tomorrow they're unveiling the trailer.. GTTV is tonight.

EU Blog post, it's like 5am Friday GTTV airs UK time.

The events take place in Southeast Asia, but Zipper is quick to point out that you'll see more than jungles and beaches in SOCOM 4. Expect to train your sights on mountains, small towns and massive cityscapes as well. And unlike previous SOCOM games, the single-player mission is designed to be a seamless in-the-field experience. That means there's no choppering out to a cushy battleship in-between missions to load out your team and regroup. The weapons and supplies you have with you at the beginning of the mission are all you get from HQ. Like a true special forces team cut off from the outside world, you'll need to requisition supplies in-theater. Hooah.

To help build a believable story, Zipper put the SOCOM 4 actors on a sound stage together and captured their movements and dialogue digitally as they performed each scene. Naughty Dog used a similar approach with Uncharted 2 in order to achieve more natural interactions among on-screen characters. The Zipper devs didn't show any acted scenes during my demo, but they did say that all cinematic scenes are in-engine. That means you won't see sharp cuts to flashy pre-rendered cutscenes; story moments will blend in and out of gameplay.

The SOCOM 4 single-player campaign is built around 14 missions that unfold over about 12 hours of play time. And although Zipper is trying to make SOCOM 4 more accessible to new audiences, that doesn't mean it'll be a cakewalk. The team says they've focused intensely on artificial intelligence this time around. Don't expect dumb enemies to present their heads to you for easy popping. They're programmed to use suppressing fire, flanking and bounding maneuvers, and cover. Enemy commanders will even call in airstrikes on you (if you leave them alive long enough).

In a brief demo of a mid-game level of SOCOM 4 called The Slums, I saw a strafing run in action, and it devastated the poor enemy saps holed up in a cluster of wooden buildings. The environments in SOCOM 4 are destructible, and building materials flew in all directions as a series of explosions ripped into the landscape.

When they weren't exploding, the enemies were behaving fairly intelligently, moving from cover to cover and attempting to flank the Ops Commander and his squad. Zipper only showed a small taste of SOCOM 4, and I didn't get to kick the tires. But for being in a pre-alpha state, the game looked sharp. The audio effects and environments were impressive, and the screen was refreshingly clear of clutter.

Looks like they're focussing a fair bit on SP as well.

Which is why it wasn't called Socom 4, it's back in the hands of it's original creator.

There will be lots of people happy about this announcement, especially with the downfall of Activision/COD.

HOPEFULLY they won't try and pull any "MAG" crap and have some lame amount of players. Just stick to 32 Players, MAX and have a great graphics engine, k Zipper?

...is that it?

You would rather we got an announcement about KZ3/R3/inFAMOUS 2/Starhawk or MS3? All games we know are in development anyway. A new Wipeout for the PS3 is already confirmed as well.

No one at all guessed Socom 4, it was a surprise, and it's coming this year.

That is much better than announcing a game we already know, or some hyped lame PSN title. I'd wait and watch the trailer we see before jumping to conclusions.

I am aware of the original creator. I am a huge fan of the SOCOM series up until Confrontation for the PS3...which was pretty much an abortion...though, I still try to play every so often. I am happy Zipper is back.

However, this is a different game than COD, and appeals to a different audience. SOCOM is more realistic, and not as fast paced as COD. COD however, isn't going anywhere. We are still getting COD titles now and in the future.

Technically not. While it may be "tonight," it comes on at 12:35 am, which is indeed tomorrow.

I personally am psyched about this announcement, and my DVR already is set to record GTTV, so I will be checking it out tomorrow.
