Portal, and it's add on map packs.

Recommended Posts

So, with the announcement of Portal 2..

This feels like a good time to bring back the goodness that is Portal the original, and some of it's best map packs or stand alone maps.

In the last 3 days I've played through the original Portal (in 3 hours and 46 minutes .. wasn't trying for speed).. and some of the best add on levels for it.

My first recommendation, and one that will likely break everyone's mind here:

http://portalmaps.wecreatestuff.com/

It gets crazy hard later.

Don't be surprised if you need to take a few breaks.

I did it in one sitting, but only because I had friends watching on UStream and I didn't have anything better to do.

My second recommendation is:

This map, is amazing.

It's not as hard as the first pack I've shared.. but it'll break your mind in a few spots until you get to understand the lay of the land in the map.

It's created by my favorite gaming company (Bethesda Softworks)'s level designer Daryl Brigner..

And finally, the map pack / add on / mod I'll be going through tomorrow..

http://www.portalprelude.com/

Which won third place in 2008's mod of the year contest.

Got any others?

Feel free to share em. :)

Are they hard as in challenging and you have to actually think about how to do it you know how Portal is supposed to be or are they hard because you need the reactions of a kid?

You have to think about where portals have to be placed, and at least a few occasions you have to be momentumly propelled.

They're difficult to say the least.

Some of them are "timing" based puzzles.

I've completed the Flash Portal maps. Pretty good, funny ending.

Downloaded the Portal Prelude just there, stuck already. How do I get up there damn it. :( Think I need to be in the mood for this.

The first map pack you posted is IMHO the best of those three. It is the only one I successfully completed, and it took a few hours to do so (for me at least).

The second one I found extremely annoying, it seemed to rely much more on reaction time/luck than I personally prefer, so I never completed it.

The third was my 2nd favorite (after the first), I stopped playing through it towards the end, it had a few more frustrating areas than the first (luck/reaction-based), but overall it wasn't nearly as annoying as the 2nd.

I absolutely loved the first one though, got stuck in the maze area for a half hour or so, but ultimately I was able to get my bearings on the room and get through it. Great mental challenge with little to no luck/reaction challenges.

I don't have any maps to add, but I would like to recommend Portal: Prelude to anyone that liked Portal, but needed more of a "Challenge". Some of the later maps are absolutely rock hard, but at the same time still great fun.

Gave up on Portal Prelude after 9 levels. Pleased I got that far without any help. I just get infuriated after trying for a while and would rather not feel like that playing Portal. Watched a few of the later levels and boy do those look mind boggling. Blood boiling avoided after quitting. :D
