[GDC 10] Official Topic

Recommended Posts

I'll be attending, although about 60% of what I'll see will be completely boring to anyone here. I will, however, try to check out any upcoming games on the show floor (here's hoping Sony shows off a 3D God of War, but I may lose blood flow to my brain, if ya know what I mean). I'll also be checking out some talks by Bungie, Naughty Dog, SCEA, and see if I can't get a hands-on with Arc and that Laura Croft game. I figured I'd make a central topic, and bigger news stories can get their own threads when needed.

Big news probably won't start until Thursday, Tues & Wed are generally just day-long sessions with progammers, artists, etc., boring **** for most of you. There's no big three keynote, but there is a focus on handhelds, especially iPhone, as well as social networking and gaming, and I believe Sid Meier is giving a keynote. Gonna try to sneak my way into the awards show, too.

edit: I take that back, Sony is having a press conference on Wednesday, expected to reveal Killzone 3. Haven't seen anything on the other two, but MS is going to be showing off Live working with Windows Phones.

edit #2: Looking at the floorplan, The big three will be in full force on the floor (in '08, MS had their own private section for XNA), Crytek will have the same size booth as the console makers, along with Epic, Valve, LucasArts, and a few others. Activision looks to have a large booth near the Career Pavillion, that should be empty.

Cool! I look forward to the news you bring us (Y)

Also would not mind some summaries of the talks Bungie and the other dev teams give :)

Will do so, complete with pictures of boring technical slides. BTW, for the gimmicky crowd, one of the sessions I'm going to on Saturday is on 3D PS3 development, which should be interesting.

I wonder if MS will be showing off Natal this year as well. From the sounds of development, there should be some demos ready.

Sony press event getting streamed live - http://www.vg247.com/2010/03/08/g4-streaming-sonys-off-site-gdc-presser-on-wednesday/

It's offsite and it's GDC, but we'll maybe get some nice Arc demos :)

100% you will. The next day will be

Introducing the PlayStation 3 Motion Controller

Speaker/s: Kirk Bender (SCEA) and David Coombes (SCEA)

Day / Time / Location: Thursday 3:00- 4:00 Room 121, North Hall

Track / Format: Programming / Sponsored Session

Description: The soon to be released Motion Controller for PlayStation 3 will allow developers to create new game play experiences, by allowing players to interact with their console in high definition using their bodies. The Motion Controller uses 3D position and orientation tracking, camera input and a controllable RGB LED to bridge the gap between camera, motion and traditional interfaces.

Eligible Passes: All Access Pass, Main Conference Pass

Thursday is also the first day the show floor is open, so I will 100% wager that Arc will be on the floor and playable.

There's also this one:

3D Game Creation on PlayStation 3

Speaker/s: Ian Bickerstaff (Sony Computer Entertainment) and Simon Benson (Sony Computer Entertainment)

Day / Time / Location: Saturday 1:30- 2:30 Room 125, North Hall

Track / Format: Programming / Lecture

Description: This session presents an introduction to stereoscopic 3D and looks at the advantages 3D brings to PlayStation 3 games. The principals of stereography are presented, demonstrating how quality can be maximised while working within the constraints of a 3D display. The theory is then put into practice on the PS3 using a simple, three step process. Case studies of several existing 3D games are presented, each highlighting real world issues and solutions. The session will conclude with a look at some of the techniques currently used in the movie industry that could benefit stereoscopic computer games in the near future.

Eligible Passes: All Access Pass, Main Conference Pass

which makes me think that there will be 3D games available on the floor.

Yeah SamBishop (IGN is it or 1UP?) confirmed whilst this is GDC (Games Developer Conference) there are some nice announcements/trailers/games to be shown off.

Probably going to be dominated by the motion controls though, so I would keep the hype meter quite low if you're not interested in either. What is usually always the most interesting from these shows is the likes of Naughty Dog or Santa Monica talking about how they achieved what they have.

And the playable demos if you're lucky enough to attend :p How is it you get in soniqstylz? Is it open to ticket purchase or do you have contacts? You seem to go each year.

I'm in school for game programming, one year left. I go to network, make contacts, get a leg up on the other students, hook up with IGDA members, etc. Didn't go last year, but did go 2 years ago. Have a few stories to tell, such as when I got the guys from Novint hammered on Jager and found them hungover but thankful the next day.

Somehow, I actually had an invite to E3 last year, but couldn't swing the flight.

Tickets are open for anyone to purchase, but it's expensive, and pointless for anyone who just wants to to play demos -- it's not like E3 used to be with huge open booths and babes, it's mostly small indie demos, majors showing off a few games, but the focus is on the tech. I've said before I'm not very interested in Arc / Natal, but I want to try them out or see applications firsthand before I make final judgement -- hopefully both will be playable, along with Sony's 3D.

There's gonna be a party Wednesday night hosted by SCEA to show off GoW3 in 3d.

There usually are big announcements, remember LBP was first demoed @ GDC in '07, Killzone 3 is supposed to be announced and possibly shown off with Arc, should see some GT5 and FFXIII action, maybe something about Gears of War 3 (Epic has a huge booth), and probably a trailer or something from Portal 2. There's usually some trailers shown off at the Awards show, which I think is Thursday night.

I'd definitely be interested in some of the developer/programmer stuff if you don't mind sharing. I can never seem to find any of the programmer presentations on the internet :(

Electronic Arts Inc., (NASDAQ: ERTS) announced today that one of the most prestigious tournaments in golf, The Ryder Cup, will be featured in Tiger Woods PGA TOUR? 11. I am an avid golfer, so that is exciting to me. I would buy their motion controller just for that alone. Unless Natal comes out and lets you use a real golf club....then I will go that route. laugh.gif

Having a kind of wild moment right now with the inventor of Lua, the sound designer from Dead Space, the testing lead from Brutal Legend, and one of the scripters from Fable siting in front of me.

Ask them the release date for GT5.

I wonder if Tiger Woods 10 will let you use the Arc (or Wiimote) in any different non-golf fashions with Joslyn James.

Judging by the lineup today, expect a lot of info on mobile games, and probably something on onLive (they have a keynote at 10am PST). Sony's presser is today, as well as their GoW3 party.

self-quote can't edit. There'll be a lot more info on XNA 4.0 today, as about 2/3 of MS's Game Developer Day stuff is on that topic.

So much for the Playstation Arc, it will be named the Playstation Move instead.

Check out Kotaku's live blogging here.

Impressions from Gizmodo:

One of the games for it is called Sports Champions, a game with a bunch of smaller mini games. One demo is a swordfighting duel game with a sword/mace and shield. It's similar to the swordfighting one in Wii Sports Resort, but with a shield too. This needs two motion controllers at once.

[sony Motion Controller is Called PlayStation Move, Launches Fall 2010] One cool effect that they can do with the benefit of having a PS Eye is that they can do augmented reality stuff, like putting a paintbrush or a tennis racquet onto your Move controller on screen.

Sony also didn't say that the controllers came in a pair, so for the games that require two controllers (like the swordfighting one), you may have to buy two Move controllers. Very Nintendo WiiMote + Nunchuck-esque in terms of having to buy two things.

Motion Fighters. A street fighting game that actually looks pretty cool, as it makes you make the entire motion instead of just flicking your wrist.

[sony Motion Controller is Called PlayStation Move, Launches Fall 2010] Oh, and there's also a sub-controller that you can buy as an attachment to turn the controller into a WiiMote+Nunchuck like configuration. It's also wireless.

From the same presser, confirmed support from LBP and SOCOM 4. May even have two different play styles adapted to the controller you use, taking advantage of the exra blu-ray space.

Show floor opens today, so I'll be getting my hands on with a lot of this stuff. Any requests? I'm fairly sure Natal should be available and this has me heartened for MS fans

We were, however, impressed that once the Natal camera locked onto us, it could ignore another person passing right behind us and through its line of sight. And we're eager to see more of Microsoft's claim that the very menus of the Xbox 360 itself can be controlled with the Natal camera and a flick of the wrist.

We know Move will be available, not sure of OnLive will be, erm, Live, or what effect it will have with local servers. GoW3 will be playable, I hope in 3D (couldn't get to the party last night, was way off-site and I didn't rent a car). Alan Wake should be playable, not sure what else -- I'm sure there will be heavy focus on WinPhone7 at their booth aside from console games. Should also be a heavy dose of indie games, I'll try to give a heads up on those as well.
