+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted March 8, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted March 8, 2010 It's GDC week! And you know what that means? It means developers get lippy with their secrets. First up: Sony's releasing something called "LBP2″ this year. Whether the LittleBigPlanet product's disc-based or a download is unknown as yet, but our source was cast iron on a 2010 ship. Sony's holding a press conference in GDC's locality this week, but we have no idea if anything from Media Molecule's to be included. A second game in the series would signal a major change in tack. The UK developer categorically said last November that releasing a full sequel is something it'd "never want to do," with level designer Danny Leaver adding it'd "be the most counter-productive thing you could do, I think." Producer Martin Lynagh said in the same interview, "I think what you've seen so far from LittleBigPlanet, that's the way it's going to continue. We have a lot of stuff coming out, especially next year." To date, the game has been serviced by DLC through PSN. We asked Media Molecule co-founders Kareem Ettouney and Mark Healy at Develop last summer if they were working on a disc-based sequel. Answer came their none. It was announced last week that Sony has fully bought the studio. LittleBigPlanet is a platform game featuring a little sack character and a suite of user-used development tools. It was released in 2008. It was confirmed in November last year that more than 1.3 million gamer-generated levels had been created for LBP, and last week that more than 2 million have been made to date. Max_Payne_UK
Yeah, I hope the back end stays the same because if we were to lose all the user created stuff that would not be good. Didn't MM say there would be no second due to it fragmenting the user base? Wonder what changed?
Tech Star
I don't feel right about this rumor. They previously said that they wouldn't make a LBP2. :/ Hmmmmmmm....
chicken-royal
Could just be a whole bunch of new levels/features to add to the original game? No idea how that'd work on a disc release though. *shrug*
Minifig
Good God, stop posting from VG 24/7. They do not get their information from reliable sources. Our extensive interview with Media Molecule ? part one of which is to be published tomorrow (Thursday), with part two going live on Monday ? covers a variety of subjects. When it came to the future of the LittleBigPlanet franchise on the PS3, they were decidedly unambiguous. ?I think what you?ve seen so far from LittleBigPlanet, that?s the way it?s going to continue.? said producer Martin Lynagh, referring to DLC and updates for the existing game. Level designer Danny Leaver said that a sequel would fragment the LBP community. ?We?d never want to do that. That?d be the most counterproductive thing you could do I think.? he said. Media Molecule have given what is surely the most dedicated post ? launch community support in the history of video games, and such dismissal of a sequel should serve to reassure fans still further. http://www.criticalgamer.co.uk/2009/11/04/a-littlebigplanet-2-would-be-counterproductive-say-media-molecule/ Please stop getting information from VG 24/7. They make crap up to get page views, and they've been caught on it before with it.
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted March 9, 2010 Author Subscriber² Share Posted March 9, 2010 I wish everyone would stop posting that one quote with a closed mind, yes he says it would fragment the community and he's right, but a backwards compatible LBP 2 working on the same engine would do just fine. Of course it's going to be denied if they aren't ready to release their plans on how they're going to keep the community together and release a new title. I'd border on thinking people are stupid if they don't think the LBP franchise is going to get more retail releases somehow. They have to take the engine forward, and there's only so much you can do with patching it/adding content to it, without reworking some of it. Anyway GDC is starting today/tomorrow, let's see what happens - It clearly says "rumour" in the title, so I'll post them as I please as long as people come into the topic noting that disclaimer before blowing my head off as I'm using a site THEY don't like.
