Ubisoft DRM Authentication Servers Go Down

Ubisoft's new DRM scheme is already causing problems, as the servers required to authenticate games went down today.

When Ubisoft announced its new DRM system, that required PC gamers to be connected to the Ubisoft servers at all times while playing, one of the biggest concerns that gamers had is what would happen if the servers went down.

Well, as it turns out, when the Ubioft severs go down, no one can play their games and Ubisoft customers get very upset. At around 8am GMT, people began to complain in the Assassin's Creed 2 forum that they couldn't access the Ubisoft servers and were unable to play their games. Fast forward ten hours and it seems that the problem still hasn't been resolved, despite the assurances from a Ubisoft representative that the servers were 'constantly monitored'

"I don't have any clear information on what the issue is ... but clearly the extended downtime and lengthy login issues are unacceptable, particularly as I've been told these servers are constantly monitored," said 'Ubi.Vigil', adding, "I'll do what I can to get more information on what the issue is here first thing tomorrow and push for a resolution and assurance this won't happen in the future."

It's unclear whether this is a worldwide problem, or just a European one, but gamers are understandably frustrated. This is a disaster that everyone saw coming, but probably didn't expect to see quite so soon.

Should have used Norton.

Hackers had previously announced they were gonna DOS the servers and they still managed to do it. Just shows the stupidity of this DRM method.

When I heard about this ridiculous level of DRM in new Ubisoft titles, I decided there and then that I wouldnt be buying any games with this "technology" built in. A shame too, I'm a big fan of the Settlers series, or should I say "was" a big fan.

Sigh...

When will these games publishers realise that adding ridiculous levels of DRM like this does absolutely nothing to combat piracy. The pirates are happy continuing to play a version of the game with this crap patched out, while those that paid the money for a legal copy cannot play.

Wake up games publishers. Pirates are not killing the PC Games industry, YOU are!

I wish game publishers had the idea of Jerry Garcia where it's the "people's music" it belongs to the people because that's essentially who they develop for. It's understandable they want to make a profit and rightfully so but when you start to control things like this then they're going to begin to start worrying for other things, and it'll never end.

On that same article...

"UPDATE: Ubisoft has since made an official apology via its Twitter, stating that its servers were 'attacked' yesterday. It went on to say that "95% of players were not affected, but a small group of players attempting to open a game session did receive denial of service errors."

An official statement made to IGN expanded upon this, saying that "All players with an open session during the attack were not affected. We also confirm that, at this time, no valid cracked version of either Silent Hunter 5 or Assassin's Creed II are available."

So what they're saying is that 5% are the guys at Ubisoft who couldn't play at their own dev room

So doesn't this type of DRM actually motivate people to pirate? They would think "I could buy the game and spend $55 only to get this raped up the ass so bad I'm going to need a sham wow, or I could pirate the the game, save $55 and have no hassle at all."

They claim there are no cracked versions of AC2 out, I just refreshed my favorite Usenet groups and I see at least 2 versions from 2 different groups available for download.

There, fixed for you. I'm willing to bet the pirates are currently unaffected by this issue.

Unaffected only because it's not out yet, but you (Ubisoft) just wait !

what happens when they stop supporting the game, in say a few years, are you no longer able to play?

No, you will not be able to. This is an educated guess based on the logic used by publishers that when you buy a game you buy a license to play the game. Not personal copy of the game itself. Therefore, when they stop supporting the game you lose the valid license to play the game and therefore cannot continue to use it.

This statement is largely written in a joking tone, as I have no idea what will happen. But, it's scary that this is probably close to true.

Pretty sure the game has been released everywhere except the US as of a few days ago.

EU: http://www.play.com/Games/PC/4-/9606606/Assassin-Creed-II/Product.html?ptsl=1&ob=Price&fb=0&&_$ja=tsid:11518%7Ccc:%7Cprd:9606606%7Ccat:Action

http://www.amazon.co.uk/UBI-Soft-Assassins-Creed-II/dp/B001TK3DO0

Been for sale at both places since last Wednesday.

So yes, Pirates are not affected by it because there is no crack out for it yet, but people in other countries ARE being affected after buying their legal game through normal sources, because they are completely unable to play the game they just paid for (last I heard the Ubisoft server issue is STILL not resolved, but I may be wrong). So, AC2 just released in other countries (outside the US), but people who have bought the game are unable to play it due to this new DRM.

Give it a few days, AC2 will be released in the US and it will be cracked, then pirates will be completely unaffected by Ubisoft DRM Server issues while legit purchasers (or those who refuse to use the crack, at the least) will be unable to play any time there are server issues.

EDIT: Also, Ubisofts claims that there is no proper crack for SH5 is just laughable. Its been cracked and working fine since it was released, they are simply trying to save face by claiming the crack isn't working properly.

They said that they can easily patch the game so it will no longer require internet connection, that's what ****es me off the most.

This reminds me that they removed SecuROM from Far Cry 2 with the last patch. Granted, by that stage they had pretty much ran the game into the ground but still they didn't have to remove the DRM.

Im not trying to defend Ubi but its because of a DDOS attack that the authentican servers are down, granted it shows the flaws in the system but dont just place the blame entirely on Ubi.
