Beginner : Idea for a website ...

Question

Hi all , for the past few months I have been putting down on paper my idea for a website, its a tad niche but I`ve put many hours thought into it and believe, that with some hard work I can make a go of it (esp now I`m not working due to a disability). The only problem is, I have never attempted anything like this before. I used to dabble with FrontPage back in the day, so decided to download the trial of MS Expression Web. WOW, it looks way overpowering. If it is the best option for me to use however, I am willing to put in the time and read up on it. Anyhow, My idea is a website dedicated to Wrestling News, DVD Reviews, Roumers etc. with a Forum (which I am setting up now). Like I said, I realy dont know what my best option, software wise is. I am attaching a quick layout, to show the type of style I was thinking of, but, is this the best way to go about it? Not only aesthetics wise, but maintance as well. For now I dont want to mess around with adverts or anything to flashy, I just want a nice simple site that looks similar to my sketch below. If anyone can leave feedback for me, that would be fantastic. Thanks very much, and Ill keep uptodate on my progress.

PS. I have my own domain (if that matters)

Try again with the image, and I'd love for you to PM me, as I've been interested in an idea like this for a while, so maybe we can help each other out. I've been web designing for years now just so you know.

www.wrestleview.com is horrible... IMO. I prefer other wrestling sites like ProWrestling.net + SEScoops.com

Image wont load but I put a link. (its a VERY basic sketch btw lol).

Anyone interested its : www.wrestlemark.co.uk (click "admin" for the forum, currently locked)

ps. SEScoops.com is the best of a bad lot imo. 99% of wrestling websites seem badly designed and have WAY to many ads)

The reasons for the ads are because it's their main source of revenue. :)

Anywho, you're probably going to need to use a back-end system like Wordpress or something similar, as that would be the easy way for a newbie coder to work with.

Wordpress makes sence as a backend, but what about the actual styling of the site? Is using something like Expression Web overkill or is it something that my needs will grow into? ATM I am just thinking about a style for the overall site (CSS baffles me btw :/). My main focus is realy going to be the forums and have the site as a work in progress. Any thoughts ?

What I realy need is expert advise from the comunity. Cheers :)

I wouldn't really suggest you using Joomla. Yes, templates are easy to develop as well as additional plugins, etc. Unfortunately this particular CMS is often slow and sluggish, not to mention load on a server.

Instead try something like Typo. It's blazing fast. The only drawback is it's complexity for beginners.

Anyone need help with Joomla ... let me know !! :)

bluefish : what version of Joomla do you know to be slow and sluggish?? Curious to know.... as i am running 1.5.15 ... and on one of my servers in the domain, its a slow little celeron, 512Mb ram ... 200GB hdd space.... windows server 2003 ... and joomla is running pretty darn smooth for its load of around 450 people collecting documentation, downloading documents and software for various installations in our industry... i have another joomla intranet running live on servers in the US, and people accessing primarily from the UK ... but also in 32 different other countries... and its running brilliantly well .. no hiccups or anything...

I know there were issues with the 1.4 release of joomla, i had a few issues.... but not anymore... thanks for the suggestion of Typo.... will look into that :)

Joomla is amazing as well. Sulphy we might be needing you too :p lol.

Just PM me if you need anything mate... :) happy to help ...

Well, it all depends of what configuration are you running + additional modules,... But still, compared to other content management systems, Joomla is a bit heavier on the load and site running it can have longer load times.

Kewl, so, i installed TYPO last night... and had a play with it... i take it you are more familiar with the system. Quick question then... is its groups management better than joomla??

I didnt see much more load of TYPO after a basic install, compared to my Joomla with all the addons and modules, and users logged on.. but i am rather intrigued by its capabilities.. and will definitely play with it some more.

Thanks again for the suggestion... usually I am the person people ask these sorts of things of! :)

You should use another html editor. The MS ones tend to make things IE-only.

Expression Web 3 works great. I use it and everything codes perfectly for all browsers that I use. (Chrome & FF)
