ReAnimation
Hi All, So, you probably know how this story goes... I get home after work, put in my copy of FFXIII and 20 minutes later the dreaded Red light of death hits my PS3. No prior warning, just a powerdown and 3 beeps. My console is a UK 'launch' model 60Gb that I bought in March 2007. I've just got off the Phone with Sony and they told me its going to cost £131 to get the console replaced via a next day courier and they'll also get the disc out of the PS3 and send it to me via recorded delivery. I've got choice of either an original 60Gb or a 160Gb with no B/C. The guy on the phone told me that Sony sell the consoles at a loss and it comes with a 12 month warranty. The guy on the phone told me as its my console I could rip it apart to try to get the disc out, but they don't advise that I try it. I honestly don't know what to do. I've got so much stuff on the hard drive that I'm going to loose (mainly save games, but theres also a few PSN titles too), plus theres the fact that theres a new copy of Final Fantasy 13 jammed in the BD Drive. Does anyone know of a way to get the PS3 to force eject discs? At the moment the PS3 is completely dead in the water, when I try to power it up I hear the fan spin up, get a blink of a yellow light, then hear 3 beeps, the fan shuts down, then the flashing red light comes on. I don't have much luck with refurb consoles (I've had 3 refurb 360's die on me before MS kindly gave me a new one), so this is putting me off paying to get the console replaced with a refurb unit. Part of me is currently thinking 'Sod it' and selling all my games etc and picking up a BD player, another Part of me is thinking about picking up a PS3 Slim and getting another copy of FFXIII with it too perhaps trading in some old games that I don't play anymore. What do you guys think I should do? If you think getting a PS3 slim is a good idea, how do you find the hardware? Suprising I'm not really that Angry. I'm just feel kind of annoyed / let down by the whole experience. Thanks for reading.
Livin in a box
?131-> B/C PS3 refurbished, most probably it'll work fine.->12 month warranty ?200-> Slim PS3, no B/C, has to work fine.------------------>" ?150-> Blu-ray player, no PS3, sell PS3 (and) games. Whichever seems the nicest one to you is the one you pick.
ReAnimation
Thanks for the reply. I think I've kind of lost faith in the old style PS3 now, I think I'm a little cautious about paying ?131 only to have the possibility of same failure happening again. I guess its a case of once bitten, twice shy..... I'm thinking about picking up a PS3 Slim and getting another copy of FFXIII, but that's a pretty big chunk of money to lay out...it's a tough call. Think I'm going to sleep on it, and see what my friends think tomorrow when I tell them the story. What are peoples opinions of the PS3 slim compared to the original? D. S. Veteran Posted March 9, 2010 Veteran Share Posted March 9, 2010 How important is BC for you? If important, go for a new one. The slim models are quite good and 250GB HDD is great. Or get a refurbished one and sell it. BC PS3s are worth a pretty sum. You'll probably get your 131? back and some and can use that to get a new PS3. About your saves, I don't know if by putting the old HDD in a new PS3 you'll be able to back it up because I think that when a new HDD is inserted the PS3 automatically formats it :pinch: Using the backup utility is the only way to keep the saves since they are tied to your profile on the console. You can't use the PS3 to PS3 tranfer utility because your PS3 got the YLOD.
KoL Veteran Posted March 9, 2010 Veteran Share Posted March 9, 2010 To force eject you have to hold down the eject button. When mine died a disc was stuck in it. I think I turned off the switch on the back then pressed the eject button then turn it back on while holding eject. The disc ejected.
Singh400
To get the disc out, I would power on, and then madly press the eject button. No idea if it'll work, but it is worth a try. And I am pretty sure you can salvage the HDD & data too. My slim is fantastic, virtually silent, never know when it is on (Y)
ReAnimation
Thanks for everyone's advice. I managed to get the disc out by opening up the PS3, then opening up the Blu-ray drive. Luckily it wasn't to tricky. I'm hopefully going to be picking up a PS3 slim tomorrow. I'm going to hold on to the 60Gb and have a go at bringing it back to life at some point in the future so that I can get my game saves off of the hard disk. I just want to get playing Final Fantasy!
