New to Final Fantasy, just bought 13 for PS3 today

Recommended Posts

So I have never played a FF game before and today I picked up FF13 for my PS3 after reading about how amazing it is.

Now the point of this post isn't to start a war but it is just so insanely boring to play. Am I the only one who feels this way?

I have spent the past 4 hours basically clicking X X X X X X X to keep doing the same thing over and over again to win a battle. Thrown in is a bit of pressing down then X to select a potion so I don't die but otherwise it is just X X X X X X and I just can't find that fun at all. Also moving the characters just feels sloppy. Like they are on ice skates or something.

Sure the graphics are incredible but there is a cut scene every 5 minutes and endless amounts of the same characters to fight with a "boss" every 30-45 minutes.

I really wish I hadn't bought it, I had an idea what it was like but never realised it requires basically just pressing the X button and using a potion or pheonix down now and then.

All I see is praise for this game but other than pretty graphics it is so repetative that I want to smash my controller on the floor.

Am I alone in thinking this or do others also find them this boring? If so nobody ever seems to say they don't like it.

The game's pacing is very slow at the start, the battle system will start to pickup and it will get harder. Stick in a bit longer :)

if you bought a final fantasy game for the gameplay, I laugh at you. Its always been about the story. Even from Mystic Quest (final fantasy 1) to the newest final fantasy, the controls are near identical and gameplay hasn't changed much.

Honestly that is how JRPG's are. It is a bit different than US dungeon trolling RPG's. Japan is all about the grind, so you will constantly be fighting similar enemies. The fun for FFXIII comes in with the new combat system they have implemented. Sort of a hybrid of real time and turn based game play which is the only reason I want to at least try it out. What I recommend to you is playing through the story as fast as possible. It will minimize the redundancy and help you enjoy the story more. Just understand that JRPG's are always going to be somewhat tedious compared to other games, but that is part of the experience.

If you want to play some games that will get you into the mood for a JRPG play Kingdom Hearts (which has many JRPG elements) or FFVII/FFX. Others would include Tales of Visperia or the other Tales Of games and Star Ocean.

Ah Mystic Quest, my first ever FF game on the SNES, had so much trouble in the ICE area... moving things in certain orders to get across areas... drove me crazy *lol*

I guess I just find "the grind" incredibly boring. It will be going onto ebay tonight I know I am not going to enjoy it so why bother wasting my time. Sucks as I am going to lose money on it now :(

Most final fantasy's are about the plot, dialouge, exploration, leveling up, and latter cut scene's, etc to big the big boss at the end.

There nothing wrong if you don't like this style of play, and nothing wrong if you want to voice that.

That is only with used games, not new ones if I recall.

I am in the UK and I don't know of anywhere that will sell a new game and allow it to be returned if it has been opened for cash but only store credit :(

Anyway is listed on ebay now so hopefully it will go quick.

I'm guessing you don't play many RPGs...

RPGs in general aren't about "ZOMG LETS KEEL, DODGE, KEEL 50 MONSTERS AT A TIME"... Main focus is story.

Only Zelda. I never really played video games much to be honest I got the PS3 as it is a good media hub plus bluray player, etc. but never really used it for games. I got Uncharted which was great but I guess that is more Action/Adventure than RPG.

the battlesystem in this FF is new, the previous FF's were not like this as far as i know ( only played FF 7 ,8 & Tactics though )

*Edit* FF7,8 and tactics are on the PSN now, i just got 7 and Tactics as liked them more and made the mistake of trading those in a long time ago

*Edit TWO* i read that its more open RPGlike toward the end, but thats hours into it.

Sold it for what I paid for it so at least I have not lost out money wise. Shame I wasted over 6 hours on it though. Can't understand how people can find it enjoyable to play such a game, it didn't feel like I had to actually do anything to progress thru the game other than press X and select between attacks and potions. Hardly rocket science, I thought the game would be challenging but 6 hours in it felt like all I had done was the same thing 500 times. Can't see how people think it is better than something like Zelda which actually required you to try to beat bosses.

Edit:Sorry that post reads like a total flame bait, I don't mean for it to sound how a lot will read it. I am not attacking JRPGs I just find it hard to understand how people find them so damn amazing :s

Sorry to break it to you buddy but Mystic Quest is NOT Final Fantasy 1..... FF1 was actually on the NES (same for 2 and 3) Look it up ;)

You know, why don't you try purchasing some Final Fantasy games from the Playstation Network Store? Give Final Fantasy VII or whatever else is there a try. I'm actually writing an article about my first encounter with Japanese RPGs. So I can understand your frustration. I wonder if Final Fantasy XIII was not the best Final Fantasy game to start off?

What I recommend you do is not to be concerned about your expectations and play the game as a constant revelation to how the story is setup. Think of it as 'playing a book'

Who knows.. the game you hate right now could become the one thing you will love for many years to come.

It happens.. even to me.

It's called being a Fanboy. The game isn't bad, but the overzealous hype you see is from people that love the pretty well animated characters would have you believe its the best thing ever. Half the stuff that makes Final Fantasy, well..Final Fantasy is gone from this game. Anyways, I'm a few hours in and I have pretty much the same thoughts on it. Without being able to control my characters (yes all of them), and without exploration, I'm feeling very underwhelmed. The story isn't bad, and the visuals are amazing but its not my cup of tea anymore. With weak gameplay for so many hours I'd rather read a book. I prefer RPG's that let you explore the world a bit more and give you more control over your characters. If its going to be strategic, I prefer to control my placement and movement, such as Star Oceans, Tales, of even better Mass Effects. In short, some people may love it, but it's not the end all and the hype is not warranted.

Nah I think I will stick to what I know and enjoy. This whole turn based, random battles thing isn't for me so I doubt I will enjoy any FF game.

Sadly you hardly even gave it a chance... You can't spend a few hours into a RPG and expect to make a final conclusion on it that soon. With that said tho it was prolly best to sell it as even if you had devoted more time to it you still might not like it.

Should always first rent genres you aren't familiar with. Glad you got your money back tho thankfully :)

No, you can return new games as well. I've returned games before after not liking them even though they were new.

There is a lot of strategy later on in FF games. At the beginning it tries to get you familiar with the combat system and moving around, etc. by throwing a lot of easy stuff at you. Anyone wonder why they have to spend a year reprogramming Asian made MMO's for the NA market? We can't handle the grind at all like Koreans can. They are machines.

I don't actually play video games much to be honest. I played Uncharted and LOVED it. Probably because it was similar to Zelda which is all I have played RPG wise before. I figured FF was sort of similar but different but it was just totally different. I tried for 6 hours which is a while but I didn't really enjoy the whole "play a movie" or "play a book" style. I guess they just didn't "feel" like a game to me so couldn't enjoy it.
