Snow leopard - Lost Default folder icons, and other problems?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Wondering if you can help me?

I restarted my mac today and when i came to log back in I noticed that the icons for applications, downloads and documents were replaced with "?", I just thought it was a cache issues so clicked on the ? and instead of opening out into a stack which it normally does it opened in the finder. From there I also noticed that all the default folder Icons where missing in my places sidebar as well, so thought would be best to just search on net for a solution which lead me to running a repair "disk permissions" when I entered the utility folder which also had no icon whatsoever I also saw that all the applications in the utility folder had no icon, however upon clicking on them the correct icons reappeared.

I went a did a permission repair and I got the following results:

Verify permissions for “Macintosh HD”

Permissions differ on "usr/share/derby", should be drwxr-xr-x , they are lrwxr-xr-x .

Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAgent" has been modified and will not be repaired.

Permissions verification complete

Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”

Permissions differ on "usr/share/derby", should be drwxr-xr-x , they are lrwxr-xr-x .

Repaired "usr/share/derby".

Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAgent" has been modified and will not be repaired.

has this got anything to do with my problem and how am I able to fix it? thanks for the help matt

edit - Also found out if I click and hold the application, document... on the dock the stacks shows, and also if I select display as stack the ? disappears but if I select folder shows a "?"

Those messages are nothing to worry about - it's just a warning, not an error. There are a list of 'safe' warning messages here.

If you use Time Machine, have you tried to roll back to yesterday? Also, have you simply tried to reboot? I usually get a 'No Entry' overlay on new stacks until I restart OS X.

oh thats good thanks, I sadly don't use Time Machine I really should.. think I will after this. A reboot dose not work! Also deleted the plist for dock, finder, and desktop to see if that would make a difference, this made no difference however I am now unable to select any places!

also I've noticed when selecting images say click view full size image on google images, it downloads it!

Also the previews on images doesn't seem to work any more and here a screen shot of the problems

I'd try first ejecting your Mac OS X Install DVD, then using Disk Utility to repair permissions one more time. After that, just completely power off your computer and start it back up again. I know, seems like a lot of pointless steps, but hell, maybe it'll work! :p

I had the exact same issue, a few days ago.

All I did was repair permissions and run the Daily, Weekly and Monthly maintenance scripts using Onyx.

After that it was fine.

No idea what caused it, being as the only recent update i had done was Safari 4.0.5. Strange.

Give running the maintenance scripts a whirl fella.
