Sony Still Struggling With PlayStation 3 Supply Issues

March 11, 2010 - Sony continues to feel the burn from "tight" PlayStation 3 retailer supply. The post-holiday sales remain down since December when the company saw record-breaking U.S.sales of 1.36 million consoles.

"There continues to be incredible demand for PlayStation 3, but tight inventory is definitely having an impact on recent sales numbers," said Patrick Seybold, Sr. Director of Corporate Communications in a statement given to IGN.

Today's February U.S. sales results saw Sony move 360,000 PlayStation 3 units for the month. The company has sold 637, 000 in the U.S. in the first two months of the year.

The company isn't too worried, however, as it expects its first-party offerings for the rest this year will give a much-needed boost to PlayStation 3 sales as retail stock is replenished.

"This year will once again showcase how deep and broad our content offerings are with breakout titles like Heavy Rain, which ranked in the top ten in February with only a week of sales in the month," he added. "God of War III which will be a multi-million unit seller and hardware driver is launching later this month, followed by ModNation Racers, Gran Turismo 5, SOCOM 4 and many more."

It is really hard to find a PS3 here in PR. On January my PS3 YLOD and I was going to get a slim but I couldn't find one anywhere. Now it is March and they are still hard to find. I got lucky and got a 250GB in Wal-Mart last week, there were only two. Just in time for FFXIII and GoW3 :D

Of course there is a shortage wink wink. Why don't they back up their semi trucks by my local Best Buy, Walmart, Target and Gamestop. They got crap loads of them. NPD numbers are down, so PR needs to spin it somehow.

Where do you live?

Here I couldn't find one in any of the Best Buys, Wal-Marts, Toy-R-Us, Sears, K-mart or the 1000000+ Gamestop that are in my area. (we don't have Target here) I tried online and they don't have them either. Tried Amazon and JR.com and they are out of stuck too.

I don't think they are trying to spin the NPD numbers. 360,100 is a pretty good number. I think they are telling the truth when they say there is a shortage.

Wal-mart and Target both have random shortages here (FL). While it's not impossible to find a PS3, I would agree that it appears to be much harder to find a unit at any given time say, versus 2 years ago. I still have the ol'school fatty from launch, but have entertained the idea of converting to the slim (to compliment my entertainment system)

This is interesting. My brother bought a PS3 late January near new from someone off of craigslist for $170 (and it came with a few games including GoW Collectors ed., Motostorm and NBA). He's seen other great deals on them since then as well. Just gotta be willing to look harder I guess.

Ive searched across 3 counties here in FL without luck. No one could even give as much as an eta on a shipment either. Miami-Dade, Broward and even West Palm Beach... all sold out. (BB, GS, WM and Target).

Wallmart .com has a Starter Bundle in stock atm. a little too pricey with shipping so ill wait.

Ouch, let me guess 60gb or 80gb was your original system?

And at work we can BARELY keep a PS3 if we get anyway, and around us bestbuy/target/KMART/shopko/etc dont have ps3's. Whenever anyone gets them there gone.

  • 2 weeks later...

They should do the numbers and split up the PS3 supply to certain stores more appropriately. In Richmond, Virginia, there are a TON in every store I walk in to.

There stacks of them here in the Wal-Marts, both the 120 and 250 gig models.

Same here including at BestBuy. I wouldn't have ever thought there was a world shortage.

Post Christmas the local BestBuy had to have had literally 50 or more sitting on display stacks with combination deals on them...

In the part of Dallas I live they are no where to be found. Maybe a shortage where you live but I would say that's not the case in the majority of the places it sells as I see post of trouble finding it all over the internet. Including from people in Europe.

Any chance of a price drop this summer? Or is it safe to buy one at any time?

Probably not another price drop for a while, due to the fact it was just dropped $299 last August. Maybe next year or when the X360 goes down in price.

Would like to note that I'm not in the market for a PS3, but my local Target hasn't had one on the shelf where they usually are for some time, just Buzz! bundles (game and controllers) and Bioshock 2 limited edition sets.

They aren't that hard to find. Admittedly only 4 in my local GAME store but when you look at the price of the games no wonder they don't sell. :s
