NPD Results for February 2010

Recommended Posts

While GDC has the entire gaming industry well occupied this week, some things continue apace, as the NPD group released their monthly console hardware and software sales figures today. For the first time since the release of Halo 3, Microsoft's Xbox 360 stood atop the sales charts with 422K units sold between January 31st through February 27th, though the PS3 did see a 30 percent increase year over year with 360K thousand units sold. Gloating in Redmond should be kept to a minimum however, as PS3 supplies continue to appear severely constrained; many major retailers online stores no longer have the system in stock, and sites like Amazon are awash in third party sellers charging outrageously marked up prices for the system. The Wii found itself in a rare second place position with 397K units sold.

Software sales are less surprising for February, as Bioshock 2 moved 562K on Xbox 360 (more than twice the number on PS3). However, in a rare twist, Dante's Inferno sold 242K on the PS3, twenty thousand more units than its Xbox 360 counterpart (though it bears mentioning that the PS3 SKU was a collector's edition with additional content, similar to last year's Arkham Asylum).

"Honestly, I had expected the industry to perform somewhat better this month," stated NPD analyst Anita Frazier. "Nonetheless," she continued, "strong new releases, and Easter gift-buying bodes well for industry performance in March." Frazier also specified that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is now the third best selling game of all time at just under ten million copies sold.

I'm actually impressed by the industry overall. Given the economy, it seems to be doing extremely well. I'm also surprised ME2 was so (relatively) low. Apparently everyone who wanted the game bought it on day one :p

still did better than Heavy Rain but my god MW2 still going strong (on both sides). I can safely predict that Xbox 360 will be the top selling console at least one more time this year though...in September?

Nice to see a change of pace but I don't see it lasting for long. Unfortunately the money printing Wii will be back on top soon enough. I'm more impressed with the DS, look at those numbers!!! :p

Seriously? I'm not surprised, but I am disappointed. I don't want people to think that MW2 is the pinnacle of what the industry has to offer.

It looks like Heavy Rain sold fairly well, but I suppose it's a question of how much the game cost to make. It hope it did well, since it was such an unusual game in this day and age. Didn't play it myself (it's pretty low on my list right now), but I know an ambitious game when I see one.

I think the 360 will be on top a few more times this year with a good number of new games coming.

I'm still amazed the PS2 is selling 100K+ units a month these days. Unreal.

It's got a good chunk of games that are worth it, if you can find them that is. I'm thinking it's gotta be pretty hard to find some of the more big AAA PS2 games, but you never know.

So ME2 must be close to 2.5 million sold now. Nice work. 360 and DS pretty much smoked everything. Heavy Rain is disappointing. PS2 seems to still be ticking.

I wonder if MW2 is the reason 360 sold so much

I know the MW2 bundles were selling like hotcakes early on. I think ME2 probably moved some 360s.

Wow, the XBox 360 did well. That's good. I find it interesting that the XBox 360 version of games seem to do much better than PS3 equivelents on a pretty regular basis... At least that's how it seems... And then they make a big deal if the PS3 sells 20,000 more units of a game? The XBox 360 sold double... lol

well, over the course of the last month i personally bought my third 360 - bought, not including replacements - and so far 11 full price games and two arcade games...that's my contribution at least!

Me too. Those are some impressive numbers.

It's good to see the XBox 360 have a good month like this. It's a good console.

Just think if they do make a 360 "slim". MS has gotta be working on it for sure, why not take a page out of the NIntendo and Sony books since they've taken out of yours already? If it's true and it looks good and is worth it I might buy one and give me current one to my sister, maybe.
