Epic Unveils updated version of UE3. Hint to Gears 3 look?

DM and Sethos would tell you we already have a GeoW that looks like that, called Uncharted.

Oh jebus, that's only funny because it's the damn truth.

Looks sweet (Y) screw Gears 3 (I lost interest in that after Gears 1 :p), I sure hope ME3 will take advantage of this!

I saw this on Kotaku and without fail I would say 40% of the comments were something about how it looks like Uncharted. 40% were that it looks like Crysis. 19% were looks like Tomb Raider. 1% was one comment but someone who actually was kind enough to remind people that Far Cry came before Crysis.

And as some of the comments pointed out, although sure it could work in Gears, just because they are showing it does not mean Gears will indeed do anything for it, this is more of just a showcase of what the engine itself can do for all of the developers that use it.

Finally one thing to keep it mind is this was without a doubt taken with a high end PC with everything maxed to look perfect. What this will translate to on the consoles will be nowhere as nice looking as being shown.

Honestly I cannot help but think if the name Unreal was not associated with it people would be way, way more critical of it all and pointing out the fact that simply put it is absolutely nothing new.

The vegetation in this shot looks great. I've always found foilage and trees to look weird in Unreal Engine.

Funny because as I've seen CryEngine 3 has managed to look great on console hardware as well. I don't see why something has to be limited to a highend PC if the devs can optimized the heck out of their engine like Crytek is doing with theirs.

I hope Gears of War 3 gets announced during E3. I want GEARS back, its the first game that kept my attention in single player. I also like the co op campaign aspect. Had a lot of fun playing single player.

+1 to both of these comments. My first thought after looking at these screenshots was that it does look like Uncharted, which I have absolutely no problem with.

Just because these few screenshots of a single map look like another game doesn't mean that every map is going to look this way. It just happens to be the environment they chose which showcases the new vegetation and enhanced lighting effects.

The foliage looks much better than what you'd see in Unreal Tournament 3 and Gears of War 1 & 2.

lawl, no doubt. Took the words outta my mouth :p

But srs, looks awesome. I hope we see areas like this in the next GoW which I really doubt we'll see this gen.

The updates to the engine should make their way into the UDK and, yes, it does look awesome.

Couldnt agree more, I played both Gears games through in Co-op, there is just not enough Co-op games like this, I would buy it just for co-op to be honest.

Of course if it looks better than Gears 2 thats always welcome.

Looks pretty nice, but it's hard to get excited about something that's not even in an actual game. That, along with the fact that it's probably running on a PC with insane specifications. I kinda doubt if we'll ever see an environment like this in a Gears game since it just doesn't fit the theme of the game (war torn world, etc.) but I guess anything is possible.

One of the things that made my jaw drop while watching the Crysis videos (back in the days leading up to the game's release) was knowing that all of those beautiful visuals were in the actual game. It's hard to say how much of the foliage detail here would still be present in a 360 or PS3 game.
