FunRoomSite Share Posted March 15, 2010 If your friend stole a car and then lent it to you, you'd still be busted. Hmmm. Good point. I wasn't planning on trying or anything, I was just curious.
CentralDogma Share Posted March 15, 2010 But what if you were given the coupon from a friend and didn't know it was fake? Well that might work the first time you get caught, and even then they might take you to court to make it all legal. But, if you try to do it again, they'll slam the book at you. It's a serious crime and could land you in jail. I wouldn't try it.

Axel Share Posted March 15, 2010 But what if you were given the coupon from a friend and didn't know it was fake? Since when was ignorance an acceptable excuse?
Kirkburn Share Posted March 15, 2010 But what if you were given the coupon from a friend and didn't know it was fake? In addition to the other points, even if you weren't busted, your friend would be. I think that still counts for something :p

Southern Patriot Share Posted March 15, 2010 Don't they scan coupons nowadays? That coupon would scan. It's actually pretty trivial to hack a standard barcode coupon to give you a free item. The last half of the barcode (besides the check digit) has to be 00001 (as it is in the one shown). The hard part is the first half, since part of it is the manufacturer and part is the item class. You can easily find this though if you have any other coupon for that item (even if it is only a percentage off or whatever, the first half stays the same).
Kirkburn Share Posted March 15, 2010 got to give them credit for being creative I really don't think you do, to be honest.
Southern Patriot Share Posted March 15, 2010 I really don't think you do, to be honest. +1 People have been using fake coupons for ages now, and as I described in my last post, it's trivial to change a regular coupon to one that gives you a free item. So they made a program to print out the coupon template, big f***ing deal!
SakuraKira Share Posted March 16, 2010 I'm sure I'll get lambasted as being "no fun" or a "corporate shill" or something, but I don't care. I love how so many people, including Neowin mods who should know better, are responding with amusement about something that is essentially stealing. After all of that crap about taking money away from Neowin by ad blocking even. Since there are so many developers here on Neowin, I would love to see any of you **** and moan about people not paying for some software you wrote. But hey, I guess that's OK because you're just a single person, and Sony is a huge corporation, right? 3 Share

Minifig Share Posted March 16, 2010 This kind of stuff could get 4Chan shut down by the FBI...
Xilo Share Posted March 16, 2010 Protip: the FBI already know about 4chan and have contacted the owner on several occasions. It's an anonymous imageboard. You can't control what people post.
Minifig Share Posted March 16, 2010 Protip: the FBI already know about 4chan and have contacted the owner on several occasions. It's an anonymous imageboard. You can't control what people post. If they're doing federal crimes, and fraud is certainly a certainly a federal crime, they have the right to track IP addresses and request as much information as they can get off the message board even if it is anonymous. Xilo Share Posted March 16, 2010 Yes, they have contacted moot the owner in some cases (like child pornography). However, it would take a ******** to get 4chan shutdown. FBI knows people post illegal stuff there sometimes but they aren't going to take it down. If they did, they would have done it years ago.

And if the server keeps no logs or any information from the people that post? So yes, if it is completely anonymous (as in no information is kept other than login names and passwords) then its virtually impossible for them to force a website to give up information that it doesn't have. Sure they can go to the web servers provider and request logs, but they cannot get info from a web site if the site itself doesn't store the info they are looking for.
