Wizz
My machine drives me nuts!!!! Last I spoke to you my computer was having problems playing sounds in XP. It would just splutter and pop. It sounded like maybe it was playing the start of a sound but not all of it. Wierd! You lot told me it was a sound card driver problem so I waited and waited for a new driver but a new one never came out. In the end I bought myself a new soundcard (Sound Blaster Audigy Player - brilliant in Win98). Same problem! Help. Here's the lowdown of my computer --------------------------------------------- Processor: AMD Athlon Thunderbird 800mHz RAM: 128 MB of SDRAM MOTHERBOARD: Gigabyte Montherboard using the VIA KT133 chipset GRAPHICS CARD: ATI Rage Fury Maxx OTHER BITS: Quantum Fireball 20.5Gb hard disk drive, Pioneer DVD Drive, Creative CD-RW drive

h71y6
YOu have to help me a bit here. Is the problem program specific? LIke does it happen when you play winamp? or play a game or anything else? When it crackles and pops do your comp slow down? Also make sure your output jack to your speakers are fully in. I know that sounds trivial but as in engineering, we ask "DID you make sure you plug in the power"" LOL
Wizz
It happens with everything, OS, WMP and all other software. Yes everything is plugged in I am dual-booting and it works fine in Win98 I have a hunch it has something to do with IRQ conflicts but I don't know what to do. In Win98 Conflicts and Sharing->IRQ shows IRQ 5 Creative SB Audigy IRQ 5 ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering IRQ 9 Conexant PCI Modem Enumerator IRQ 9 RAGE FURY MAXX Secondary IRQ 9 ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering RQ 9 SCI IRQ used by ACPI bus IRQ 10 PCI OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller IRQ 10 VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller IRQ 10 VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller IRQ 10 ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering IRQ 11 RAGE FURY MAXX (English) IRQ 11 ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering IRQ 14 Primary IDE controller (dual fifo) IRQ 14 VIA Bus Master PCI IDE Controller IRQ 15 Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo) IRQ 15 VIA Bus Master PCI IDE Controller However in WinXP it shows IRQ 9 Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System IRQ 9 ATI Technologies Inc. IceHawk
Try a different PCI slot on your motherboard.

Wizz
I guest all i need to do is change the IRQ settings but how do i do that? In Device Manager they're all greyed out.
h71y6
i don't think it's the IRQs. Do this just to try it out, roll back your drivers OR reinstall the original driver provided by Microsoft and signed by Microsoft. I had spluttering when they came out with new Live drivers for xp. try it you migth be surprised, i know i was.
Wizz
Aggghhhhhhhhhhhhh. Alright, no sound comes out of your computer. What's wrong? Sound Card. No!!!! It was the graphics card. The ATI Rage Fury Maxx works by basically using two graphics processors to double the power. In my insanity I disabled the ATI Technologies Inc. RAGE Fury MAXX (Device 2) and reboot. Sound works fine.:dead: Why??!!! I'm getting the Creative GeForce3 card soon, will that help??

Ok wizz.. calm down LOL ... this tells me it's clear that it's the IRQs. It's congested. Check your bios settings to see if you can change your IRQ settings for devices. Then if not, change your PCI cards around. And i mean Change them. If this still doesn't work, throw it away... LOL.. no seriously, put in one PCI card, then boot and start OS, shut down, put in 2nd PCI, then so on and so on... putting your Soundcard last. The last resort will be resetting your bios and updating it.. which means yes... GASP... flashing the ROM... the bios has it's way of determining which device will be used with which IRQ... different versions of bios MIGHT alter that setting.. Tell me how it goes. Memphisto
Wizz...h71y6 is right on with this one. From your IRQ listings, it looks like you have Plug & Play OS turned on in the BIOS. If you turn this off, the BIOS will auto configure the IRQs instead of XP and with this configuration you can manually assign the IRQs yourself if necessary. Wizz
Thanx. I tried that with P&P OS switch on. I'm an idiot!!!! However I can't change the IRQ of my graphics card cos' it's in an AGP slot. Figure That?
h71y6
LOL.. wizz... i'm thinking about changing the IRQs of the other cards and not the AGP.. i think you have 9, 11, 14 and 15 free to use. so let the vid card and the USB controllers take IRQ9 while the others take up the others.
