DrBroccoli
So lately I've noticed my Macbook Pro to be quite noisy. According to iStat menus, the fans seems to always be running at 4,000 RPM, even if I am just staring at my desktop, with nothing open. They speed up normally when the CPU is under load, but they never go lower than 4k. I tried using SMCFancontrol to restore the default settings, but they still run fast. I even reset the SMC the other day hoping that would fix it, but it didn't. I've checked activity monitor and used a few terminal commands to check for any processes that are causing high cpu load or anything weird, but I haven't found anything. Any suggestions or ideas would be great!
Lewism
What about the CPU temp? Maybe it is overheating because there is too much dust inside.

Hmm, that COULD be possible, but my Pro is only ~6 months old. Here's a shot of my temps after about an hour of Safari browsing, with a bit of Flash video:
ynnoj
There's no way your fans should be running near 4000rpm when your CPU is only at 38c. My 2.2 C2D MacBook CPU temp is at 54c right now (iTunes, Safari), and my exhaust fan is running at a cool 1800rpm. Have you tried resetting your PRAM? Nope, I'll do that now, I'll post back with results.

ynnoj
Could potentially be a logic board issue. Get it checked out at an Apple Store.
+jamesyfx Subscriber² Posted March 18, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted March 18, 2010 What is the condition of the SuperDrive? Is it all working okay? On my old MBP, the fans stuck on full when I disconnected the drive.
DrBroccoli
I finally figured it out. There was a program I used before SMS Fan Control that installed a preference pane, and it turns out, even after removing the program and preference pane, there were still traces of it, which were running at startup and causing the constant fan speed. I'm now back to enjoying a quiet Macbook Pro =D. Thanks for the quick replies though!I asked for help over at MacRumors and so far have received 0 responses, and I posted there 2 days before I did here! Much better here =D.
