[PHP] eCommerce System

Question

I am looking at open source PHP eCommerce systems. I would possibly consider a commercial solution if it is worth the price.

I have been looking through here and the one that caught my eye was OpenCart. I heard a lot of people saying certain systems have terrible code, documentation, or need commercial plugins to function well.

Any recommendations? Thanks :)

I've used osCommerce in the past and have one client on 2.2 now. It works, is infinitely customizable, and has a lot of features built-in, plus a very large library of add-ons and a solid community of developers around it. With that said, 2.2 is a mess. If you can afford to wait, I'd wait for 3.0 to release and give it a shot - will fix a lot of the issues 2.2 has.

As for the OpenCart you linked, I've never heard of it, but just took a look at the demo and it looks like a solid solution. The reporting isn't very robust, and your configuration options are limited, but it's very user-friendly and would be quick to get up and running with.

FWIW: I've never tried it, but a lot of the members here also recommend Magento - they have a crippled free version and a paid commercial version.

Just started using OpenCart. So far it's good. Nicely written.

Not great for expanding however since you have to edit core files when making your own mods.

However, I am liking it so far :)

Are there any requirements that you need?

Thanks for the responses.

@metal_dragen It looks like osCommerce development has pretty well stalled. Do you know if a new version is coming soon. The last alpha of 3.0 was over a year ago.

@ncc50446 No specific requirements. This will be for an eyeglass/vision store that has a local branch and wants to sell inventory online. Not very many items and probably not very high volume. I would say esthetics and one of the most important things. She does want to integrate PayPal (which it looks like OpenCart does) s well as possible regular credit card processing.

Anything special I need to know about getting SSL setup? I have never really dealt with SSL certificates before. I know how to obtain one just not the whole setup. I imagine it should not be too difficult if it is only needed for the store shopping cart part.

I used to work for a company that used osCommerce, it was full-featured and worked well. Didn't have a problem with it. Can't really vouch for other stuff.

Magento without a doubt. It has support for Google Checkout, Paypal, etc.. I use it for any client that needs a cart that will have a lot of products. Otherwise it is VERY in depth (aka.. bloated) for something that will be basic and have few few products.. And do pay attention to the hosting requirements as well! :)

If you need a quick solution for a small cart, I'd recommend simpleCart(js).
